Could Arsenal really be in the market for a player of this quality?

It’s been a long-time since we’ve seen Arsenal really went after a player with a big price tag. Arsene Wenger prefers to snap up a bargain, or unearth a young gem and let him develop, instead of spending big.

The risk, when you spend big, is that you’ll end up with a player who adds very little to the team beyond damaging them financially. Take Andy Carroll as a case in point. Liverpool are now in turmoil because they took a gamble on a player with a big reputation and an even larger price tag.

But some players don’t seem to present any kind of risk whatsoever. I’d argue that Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao is one of these men. This is a man who simply can’t stop scoring. Last season he found the back of the net 36 times in 50 games. This season he has already grabbed 12 goals in just 7 games. Simply unstoppable.

Arsene Wenger made a mistake last summer, by letting the best striker in the world leave the Emirates and join Manchester United. Robin Van Persie is a tough man to replace – just ask Olivier Giroud.

But if anybody’s up to the task, Falcao is. Whilst he doesn’t share RVP’s technical ability (though he’s no slouch in this department), he makes up for it with his physicality, athleticism and aerial ability. His confidence in front of goal is more or less unmatched.

But surely the notoriously tight-fisted Arsene Wenger can’t be in the market for a player like Falcao, who’s sure to cost an absolute fortune? Well, according to The Mirror, Arsenal have the cash to spend and Wenger is willing to consider a move for the Colombian.

Peter Hill-Wood has announced that should Arsene Wenger wish to spend money this January, ‘there will be funds available to him’.

For what it’s worth, I feel it’s about time that Arsenal splashed a little cash and Falcao could be just the kind of signing to get fans believing again. With Falcao leading the line, the Gunners would be an altogether different prospect. The thought of Santi Cazorla feeding the ball into the Colombian, rather than Olivier Giroud is incredibly appetizing.

That said, I realize that this transfer is unlikely to happen. But that won’t stop me from dreaming.

What’s your take? Could Radamel Falcao end up at the Emirates?

We MUST sign him. If we leave him to the opposition he will thrash us. We will make the money back by winning competitions with him. He will fit in to the team so well.
