Arsenal have made contact, but should they push through this transfer?

Arsenal have never exactly been a side that struggles to grab goals. Whilst they’ve had problems with their defense in the not so distant past (and arguably still do until this day) they’ve always had a fearsome attack that were more than capable of finding the back of the net.

Last season, they had what amounted to a one-man attack (ably supported by the likes of Theo Walcott and Alex Song) in Robin Van Persie. The Dutchman’s leaving the club was always going to cause problems.

But whilst some predicted the Gunners would collapse and crumble, they’ve managed to get by fairly well. This is largely thanks to an impressive midfield and better defensive solidarity. They have, as predicted, struggled to replace RVP.

The man they brought in to do this job hasn’t adapted to the Premier League as quickly as was hoped. This is somewhat strange, as Olivier Giroud seems to be tailor built for the Premier League. He’s a strapping young lad, with the physicality, movement and finishing ability to outclass defenders. As luck would have it, however, he appears to have left his ability to grab goals in France.

Two goals, one against Coventry City and the other against West Ham, have done little to convince fans that he represents a long-term solution.

Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott are being deployed out-wide (despite both claiming to be centre-forwards) and Gervinho, despite scoring goals, looks to be an unlikely striker. He’s too erratic and inconsistent to hold down the role for any given period of time.

So I think it’s fair to say that this may be an area where Arsene Wenger looks to improve over the January transfer window and the next summer. In this regard, it’s pleasing to see talkSPORT claim that Arsene Wenger has asked to be kept in the loop concerning any developments that involve Athletic Bilbao’s powerful striker Fernando Llorente.

Anybody who saw him take apart Manchester United last season knows exactly what he can offer. He’s a real presence, in the air and along the ground and has the technical ability to back up his physicality. Best of all, he scores lots of goals – which is exactly what Arsenal need at the moment. Last season, the Spaniard grabbed 29 goals. Not a bad return!

His contract is due to expire at the end of the season and Athletic may be willing to let him go for less than they think he’s worth. If Arsene can strike a deal, he could end up being just what the club need.

What’s your take? Would Llorente help to improve Arsenal
