A potential free transfer that may just spur Liverpool into life?

Ashley Cole, despite all his ability on the pitch, gets a lot of stick from the fansI have to confess. This rumour is a little out there. I do, however, think it’s worth discussing.

According to FootyLatest, Liverpool have joined Juventus in the race to land Chelsea’s experienced full-back Ashley Cole. Despite being a long-term admirer of the English International, I’ve never really pictured him ending up at Liverpool.

Despite leaving Arsenal on bad terms, he seemed to have settled down at Chelsea. It’s strange to see that he has decided to wear down his contract and look for a move elsewhere.

But, it’s perhaps not as surprising as it would have been were the likes of John Terry or Frank Lampard to have played this trick. After all, Ashley Cole has a past in this regard. He’s clearly not that bothered about loyalty and given his already tarnished reputation, it makes sense that he would seek to force his way out the club.

If Ashley were to leave on a free, I’m sure the club he joined would be willing to pay him more when it came to wages. Could it be possible that Ashley has played the system to ensure his final contract earns him a significant sum of cash? I’d rather not say.

Regardless of his morality (or, heck, likability) when it comes to switching clubs, there’s no doubting his ability on a football pitch. He’s the finest British left-back of this generation and remains one of the best in world football.

Sure, he’s not getting any younger, but he definitely has a couple of years left in him whilst he’s still at the top of his game.

Whilst Liverpool aren’t exactly in desperate need of another full-back (they need a striker – desperately!) Cole could be just the signing to spur them back into life. It would re-establish them as a club that big players want to join and could give them the confidence and the belief to start challenging for a top four finish.

Cole’s experience and his ability to bomb up and down the left-flank would be of advantage to any side. You feel that Liverpool, in particular would be able to profit, as they often lack penetration down the wings.

It’s for this reason, that I think Brendan Rodger’s should try and claw Cole from Chelsea’s clutch. So long as he also brings in a decent striker, Liverpool may well find themselves a club re-born.

What’s your take? Would Ashley Cole be a smart addition at Anfield?

If liverpool signed Ashley cole, I would not set foot in Anfield until he left. Never has a more vile man played in our league. I’d have Joey Barton at left back rather than him.

  • Plank says:

Clint Dempsey at 29, was considered TOO OLD by the Owners, what age is Ashley Cole,?
Besides, we already have Joke Hole.

  • Zane says:

A player of Cole’s ability won’t sign for Liverpool. If he leaves Chelsea,it will be for clubs like those in the USA,Russia and Asia who will gladly give him a huge retirement salary. A player in his right mind won’t go and play for Liverpool who struggles with consistancy and a place among the top 4,they won’t even offer him a mega deal.

  • Gray says:

we’ve allready signed one cole from chelsea on a mega bosman. thats not working out so well. this will never happen. lfc wont pay what others will anymore. Fact.

  • Jack says:

Why would Liverpool want to do that? How would a left back with only a few years left in his career spur us back into life? We need a striker mate…

  • John says:

Everyone hates us already, so why not? He’s infinitely better than Enrique. Wages might be an issue though!!

If he offered to play for us for free I still wouldn’t want him at Anfield. The club is not about win at all costs, it’s about winning the right way and if that means we have to go through some pain to get there, then it just makes the victories so much sweeter.

Buying “star” players has never been the way that we found success, finding young, hungry, commited players is how we got it done. But more than that doing it the right way ends with players you support with all of your heart.
