Why Manchester United can afford to let him leave this January:

Where it all went wrong for Manchester United’s Brazilian ace, Anderson is hard to say. £18m is a lot of money and it’s fair to say that he hasn’t lived up to his price-tag. Indeed, he’s had five years at Old Trafford and whilst he’s benefited by picking up a decent amount of silverware, he’s offered United very little.

As his career has progressed, injuries and attitude problems have made it increasingly unlikely that he’ll have any impact moving forward. The time may well be right for Sir Alex Ferguson to cash in.

Indeed, The Mirror recently reported that Manchester United will look to ship Anderson to the highest bidder this January (or in the summer if they don’t get the right offer).

Now usually, I’m all for giving players another shot. Sometimes players take a while to adapt to the Premier League. Sometimes they’re too raw and inexperienced. Sometimes they’re short on confidence. But in Andersons case, he needs to find excuses for five years of average-to-poor performances.

Yes, many may look to excuse him on the basis of his injuries. They may compare him to somebody like Arsenal’s Abou Diaby, who has suffered throughout his career with injuries, only to go through something of a career renaissance this season, having found fitness again. But can you really see this happening with Anderson? He just doesn’t seem to have the basic footballing nous or intelligence to play an integral part in this Manchester United side.

As a result, Sir Alex has never really been able to pin down a single role or position for the Brazilian. He tends to play him as a dynamic, box-to-box midfielder, a role he’s not really suited for. Perhaps he’d be better off at a club that would permit him to play behind a striker?

Whether you’re a fan of Anderson or not, you can’t deny that he’s a costly expense for Manchester United at the moment. He’s constantly injured, perpetually unfit and prone to disappoint. Given that he’s picking up a fairly hefty wage packet, it makes sense for Fergie to consider his options.

If United can recoup upwards of half what they paid for Anderson, I think it would make sense for them to sell. Anderson has had his chance.

What’s your take? Have I been too harsh? Does Anderson have a future at Old Trafford?

look at the position he played in his time in portugal and look at the position hes been asked to play at united. totally different given the chance to play in his prefered position i think he would shine. he has great ammount of energy and pace on his day he can pass the ball as good as carrick and he can score goals too hes just not had the chance to score in the role hes been given. remember alan smith… striker turn defensive midfielder….FAIL fergie is goin same way with anderson.

This is total crap the lot of it. Anderson and Cleverley had fun with the rest of the PL at the start of last season. Coincidence or not, but Fabregas never even got the ball playing vs Anderson. If you cant get more than 5 games in a row due to injuries, then maybe you should be moved on. Skills or motivation is hardly the case if so be it.

Also mind that if you include Andersons last 25 starts, he has better offensive stats than Scholes. More throughballs, more precise longballs, more dribbles past opponents, more goals, more assists – and he has won a hell of a lot more balls back through tackles and interception than the elder hero.

I cant understand why people want to keep Scholes and Giggs forever. In my mind, theyve been mediocre for a team of Uniteds stature the last 5 years. Sure Scholes can pass a ball, but I remember we laughed at Jan Molby at Liverpool – a player who hardly left the circle in the middle of the park – “Scholes but an older version?”).
Except for that goal vs Barca in 2008 (which IS 4 years ago), I have not seen Scholes done anything good vs a good team. Wigan is not such a team.

When it comes to Giggs, I think he had his best overall season just a few years ago – but he has always missed a lot of passes (taking more risk than the alwayssidewayspassing Scholes – was 96% sideways last season), but he covers a hell of a lot more ground and wins the ball back for the team.

Its nice to have heroes and believe in someone (like Ferguson does in these two players), but its also nice when you get your head out of the sand and understand your time has passed.
This should be Fergusons last season – his tactics and understanding of the game is modernized surely, but its the quality of the players we have that win games – not the old man being a tactical genius.
I fear we would have won more of we had let Scholes and Giggs play minor roles than they have been and used better players instead 🙂

Totally useless. Most of his injuries caused by being unfit. How he has lasted so long is beyond me. Maybe time for saf to go too if he can’t see the rubbish he’s bought for our midfield.

  • Om says:

Who is this author?stay off anderson.he’s not leaving period.not as if our midfield is any better with the likes of carrick in it.lay of ando,he’s not the problem here,it’s carrick,he tends to struggle with physically imposing players in midfield.get read of him(carrick)get us fallaini, period.
