What happens when a team struggling for goals sells or loans players like Dirk Kuyt, Craig Bellamy and Andy Carroll, whilst only bringing in Fabio Borini? I’d say Liverpool’s bizarre footballing experiment has already brought about its conclusion: the goals dry up even more. Who’d have thought it?

Beyond Borini having a remarkable first season (which let’s face it, was never very likely) this was always going to be the case. But this isn’t an article looking to critique Liverpool’s transfer failings. There’s been enough of that already. No, this piece seeks to determine whether the Reds can find a solution for their failings up front from within their squad.

Given the lack of options upfront, it’s clear that Liverpool are going to have to dig deep, look at the Academy options and unearth a few rough diamonds. They just can’t afford to lean on Luis Suarez for the rest of the season (or at least up until January).

It seems that Brendan Rodgers (is any other Premier League manager currently facing such a mammoth task? I think not) has realized this necessity. Speaking to The Independent, he said:

“There might need to be an intermediary way of working now. Boys like Suso will get their opportunity. The percentage under 21s playing in the Premier League is statistically very, very small. We are going to be stretched the limit… We’ve got to be together and be strong. This [situation] will allow guys to stand up to the plate. You get an opportunity but you have got to take it.”

Whilst there may be some doubt about Suso’s ability to make a real impact at this stage in his career, there’s no doubt that he’s a real prospect. You get the feeling that a technical player of his nature for fit neatly into Brendan Rodger’s style of play. As long as levels of expectation are managed, I’d love to see him get some game time.

Then there are players like Samed Yesil, Adam Morgan and Daniel Pacheco, who Liverpool fans will be hoping will be capable of making an impact at the very top level. The odds are stacked, but if Liverpool’s plight unveils a genuine talent, un-awed by top flight football, then it wont all have been bad. Will it?

What’s your take? Just what can Brendan Rodgers achieve this season with this squad?

I have for the past two seasons been puzzled by the way Pacheco has been treated, in my opinion he has everything we need in a player, he just has not been given the chance. Stirling, Suso, Morgan and Yesil have to be given the opportunity. Let’s be honest we have’t got much option, with Gerrard, Suarez to help them it might not be that bad. Our defense is solid enough, let’s go for it.
