Is this young Chelsea star in danger of getting ahead of himself?

After a sparkling to the season, Chelsea fans will have been disappointed to have seen their side struggle to pick up a draw against QPR. Whilst it’s not the end of the world, it does end their perfect record thus far this season.

Fans may have been further disappointed by some comments from their new signing Victor Moses. The former Wigan forward is talented no doubt, but I’d suggest he needs to get his priorities in order.

Check out these quotes, courtesy of the Guardian: “It has been a long journey [from Nigeria] and I just want to keep strong and work hard for myself, whether it’s football or not football. I have to thank God for being where I am, it’s like a dream come true and, if I keep working hard, who knows, I’ll probably end up in Barcelona one day.”

There’s little doubt that it’s been a long and eventful career for Moses thus far. But I can’t help but feel that he misses the mark with his Barcelona comments.

I get the point that he was trying to make: that he sees his career as an evolution and that if he continues to develop at the same rate, he’ll end up at the world’s top club.

The fact is, however, making the step up from Wigan, to Chelsea is challenge enough in itself. Given his age and his competition it may take two-or-three seasons for him to establish himself at Chelsea. There’s little point thinking about what he’ll do then. His focus should be on staying modest and figuring out how he’s going to become a key player in a side that already easily challenges Barcelona for talent.

Ambition is one thing. Staying respectful is another. I don’t like the idea that a player could be at a club for under a month and then reveal that his primary aim is to one day join Barcelona. Whether it’s true or not, this seems like something that he should keep to himself. It’s a shame as elsewhere in the Guardian interview he comes off as a likeable, introspective type.

We’ve seen from his time at Wigan that he’s a precocious talent. If Cheslea can harness it properly they’ll have quite a player on their hands. Let’s just hope he doesn’t run off to Barcelona if and when they come knocking.

What’s your take? Was Moses disrespectful or is it wrong to berate his ambition?

Too early for the comment. Anyway, he is still young and ambitious.

  • Ben Watts says:

Interesting quote you’ve found there Harry, and i agree, it was perhaps a little foolish of Victor to say such a thing. However, as a Crystal Palace fan, i’ve watched Moses ever since he began his professional career and i don’t think such an attitude is truly in his character. He’s very humble and on the contrary to his flamboyant playing style, he’s actually quite a shy, quiet lad. So, to any worried Chelsea fans, i would take his comments with a pinch of salt… He’s a special lad and will be a loyal and remarkable player for them if given the opportunity.

  • Adam says:

If really Moses said so, he disappointed me and when he left chelsea i ll stop wishin him anything.

  • Sir Cecil says:

Only idiots would take his comments as anything other than lighthearted. But to actually try to make a negative article out of his words shows a very special level of idiocy.

  • Abdulmalik Usman says:

Moses…if you don’t ‘ve better comment to offer, you rather remain silent because that is what we called ”rubbish”

  • Damian says:

Moses have lost the track completely how can u be in a club and be singing praises to another club i think that is disrespect for chelsea he better be cautioned! only God knows how many fans he have lost with that disrespectful statement he should remember he just started the biggest football career of his life. Watch ur tongue Moses if u want to be respected as chelsea player !

  • Damian says:

Tell me why fans will not love David Luis for his respect and love for the club he played for! Who so ever want the same respect should emulate his way .

  • Solo says:

I tink moses is a lad of yesterday at stamford brigbe wit little faith by his comment. But wil b cautioned nxt tim he ii b on press conference pls let us 4giv him he is our broda.

  • It is unfortunate Moses is passing such comment in less than a month on his arrival at CHELSEA.Why did he keep those comments to himself at Wigan? or is CHELSEA a transport medium to Barcelona?Anyway, we have other players of his type so he can leave as early as possible, shameful African.
