Can Liverpool afford to splash £16m to fix their striking woes?

When you score 57 goals in two seasons, clubs tend to sit up and take notice. For Seydou Doumbia, it meant a move to CSKA Moscow, where he proceeded to grab 49 goals in 71 appearances. That’s some pedigree – the youngster just can’t stop scoring.

And at 24-years-old, the time may be right for a move to a top club. There are, of course, plenty of clubs who need his goal scoring ability and there are thought to be a number of clubs interested.

GiveMeFootball claim that Chelsea, Newcastle, Lazio and Liverpool are all interested. Of that list, surely the Reds are the most needy?

For some reason, Liverpool opted to send their £35m striker, Andy Carroll out on loan (likely because they have so many other options in that area) to West Ham. Whatever the logic, it’s clear that this is an area that the Reds and Brendan Rodgers will need to consider when January comes swinging by. Indeed, I’m sure that Rodgers is waiting with baited breath for the new year.

He’s been saddled with a shoddy side and will surely see 2013 as a chance for a new beginning and retribution. But, there’s some doubt that over whether the club’s top brass would be willing to let Rodgers spend big to correct their mistake.

I wonder what they’d think of Doumbia’s £16m price-tag. That seems a lot for a play who is yet to prove himself in one of Europe’s top Leagues. But spending £16m on a natural goal scorer is exactly what Liverpool need to do at the moment. It’s the main area that they find themselves short on and Doumbia would represent a capable, affordable solution.

Doumbia reminds me a little of Didier Drogba, thanks to his sheer physical presence, aerial dominance and confidence in front of goal. And at 24, he’s about to enter into his peak. The fact that the likes of Newcastle and Chelsea are after him, is a testament to his ability. It would be a shame for Brendan Rodgers to miss out because Liverpool’s owners weren’t willing to back him.

What’s your take? Could Doumbia make an impact at Anfield, or would he be too costly?

I don’t think Seydou Doumbia will be a floop and at 16m will already have some play costly than that and still didn’t do well and for the age he can adjuest and do well

I’ve got a hunch that the owners will spend big on a striker in jan. After the embarrasment of the last window, I think they will be willing to spend….just to send out a reminder to everyone, their fans especially, that this is Liverpool.
    Its just a hunch though!
