I’m fairly sure that if you’d asked a Liverpool fan to describe the worst possible start to their season, they’d have detailed a scenario that fell in line with their showing last weekend. To put it simply, West Brom looked to be the better side and were good value for their three goals. A Daniel Agger red card was merely the icing on the cake. If Liverpool fans had expected the summer to wash away the misery of last season, they were sorely mistaken.

By now it’s clear that something drastic needs to happen and that the club will have to make further additions before the transfer window closes if they’re to have a shot of competing this season. But just who should they look to bring in?

The Reds have been heavily linked to Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey (indeed, this saga seems to have dragged on all summer) and I can’t help but feel he’d be a smart addition. I wouldn’t go as far as to claim that he’d be the miracle fix the Reds need, but he’d certainly add quality, endeavor and goals to Liverpool’s lackluster midfield. Speaking after Fulham’s 5-0 win at the weekend, Martin Jol made his club’s position clear:

There is nothing on the table from Liverpool. Maybe Clint knows more than us but we feel he should stay if there is no other bid.” (Source: The Daily Mail)

Brendan Rodgers also had his say on the matter:

“We’re linked with lots of players, but regarding Dempsey, there’s nothing to report”. (Source: Liverpool-Kop).

It looks like things have started to stall and to my mind, that’s a bit of a shame. Liverpool fans are now accustomed to the fact that their club needs to make sensible signings. Signings that don’t break the bank. Signings that could help the club rebuild. Given that Clint Dempsey is in the final year of his contract, Liverpool would be able to snap him up at a bargain price. It would be difficult to find players of his quality at a similar price.

But most importantly, Liverpool need goals. That’s something that Dempsey’s known for. Last season he grabbed 23 goals in 46 appearances – a very healthy return for a player in his position. Given this aptitude and Liverpool’s pressing need, the deal seems to be a bit of a no-brainer. So here’s hoping the Reds can pull this one out of the bag.

What’s your take? Is Clint Dempsey now a must-buy for Liverpool?

  • we need these guy ( CLINT DEMPSEY )more than the him ( Dempsey )may need us we still lack the top finisher in our squad and not as if Dempsey is a top finisher but with what i saw at our opening game against wba there is no way would have not convert some of the chances we got in that game and could have change the score line for us.

This site must be related to the Bleacher USA one. Determined to get this Yankee player into Anfield. Why stop there? Get us to turn out wearing baseball knickerbockers and peaked caps !!!

In Clint Dempsey I trust! If BR FAIL to sign him, that’s to say he’s not looking for our way forward, rather, He’s going to lead us to religation zone.

Lfc will not be held to ransome over any players. Fulham want the bids to start at £10mill, they can keep him, £10mill + salary for 3/4 years, and no sell on value, it would be the same as buying a younger player for double the money. Lets buy the younger player on a much smaller salary, who would have a sell on value. THATS GOOD BUSINESS.

Good Bussiness??? What RU talking about. Did u see MU buy kanagawa and said ‘well sell him in 3-4 years time to make profit.Bollock. They said ‘we want to win the EPL”””… Now thats football. Well if u wanna see us buy/sell, why dont send Liverpool to wall street. WE MUST FIGHT FOR OUR PRIDE. WE ARE LIVERPOOL NOT TOM,DICK AND HARRY CLUB. Pride of ENGLAND.
