What would you say is Tottenham and Andre Villas-Boas’ main priority this summer? Most fans have already made their voices clear. They’re desperate to see a 20-30 goals-per-season striker brought in to help guide their side to some success in the Premier League (ideally a place in the Champions League). But what about the current goalkeeping situation at the club? I know it’s not quite so glamorous a position, but it’s just as important to the team (if not more so) and Tottenham are arguably just as lacking in this department.

Luckily, the wheels already seem to be turning. We’ve heard a lot about Lyon’s ace goalkeeper Hugo Lloris over the last couple of months. We’ve even seen the bizarrely headlined story, ran by the Daily Mail, suggesting the Ligue 1 club would not be willing to let go of their star goalkeeper unless ‘he begs to leave’. The actual quotes, provided by Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas, paint a different picture:

“Tottenham made contact through [Lloris’] agent but there has been no concrete offer since. I don’t think they really want him, but we really want to keep him. He will stay at Lyon unless he absolutely wants to go. The best present we can give to the fans is finding a way to keep him. We will try to do just that.”

I can’t see anything in there about Lloris needing to ‘beg’. That’s a fairly evocative word, that doesn’t seem to match what Aulas was trying to communicate. He’s made it clear that Tottenham have flagged up their interest and he’s also made it clear that he’s willing to consider letting Lloris leave. We’ve now also heard from his dad, who claims that Tottenham’s deal for Hugo could be ‘accelerated if Modric joins Real’ (Source: ClubCall).

ClubCall also claim that Lloris is rated at around £12m. For that kind of money, given Lloris’ status and quality, Tottenham would be getting a bargain. Just consider: Manchester United spent upwards of. £20m bringing David de Gea to Old Trafford. Lloris has a similar level of talent, but more confidence and more star power.

With Brad Friedel on the way out and Tottenham’s reserve keepers completely unreliable, Lloris looks like the ideal solution. He won’t come cheap, but no half-decent goalkeeper does anymore.

What’s your take? Would Lloris be a good addition at White Hart Lane, or should Andre Villas Boas look elsewhere?

what planet are you on? We have THREE goalkeepers and whatever your opinion is regarding their respective age and consistency we nevertheless have three of them and they are all good enough to start in our number 1 position. Upfront we have Defoe and an entirely unproven and seemingly unimpressive Kane. We need two strikers! Before we sign anyone else, we must at least get one. There is no greater priority so save your mumblings for the day after we get that sorted. If we had a 20+ goals a season striker then we would have qualified for the Champs league consistently over Arsenal. It has been our greatest need for the past three seasons and for another summer to go by without sorting it is beyond ridiculous. Sorry to have a go mate, but you are wrong, next summer I will back you all the way…we need a striker!

The outgoings and incomings are not that far apart regarding the above transfer possibilities. Theres obviously not much time but by next season would love to see us line up like the above, to really get where we wanna be we need to go for it.

    I can but dream COYS!

That sounds like a lovely recipe for Europa league next year. Lennon is one of our most dangers players, Parker is an England international, Livermore is one of our most promising young talents. Ripping apart the squad like that would be awful and no way would all of those players be integrated in time and with success. Also with regards to Coulibaly, Ceballos and Carroll, they aren’t ready, Loans for Coulibaly and Ceballos, cup games for Carroll.

    • George says:

      Matty for chairman.

    • default says:

that leaves 7 english players in the squad. apparently you don’t want to play in any competitions with this team.

    • Seymour says:

Too much Champ Man for Matty I fear…

Nice concept, tho I don’t agree with all of it, there’s definately some dead wood to shift but who will want + be able to afford wages of; Gomes, Jenas, Bentley, GDS, Bassong etc

Whilst Loris would be a good buy, and decent value at £12m I think we can afford not to buy a GK for another year…by which time Archer may have pushed on…

      • CaptainYid says:

        Agreed…

I love how most fans just want to buy everyone and anyone we’re linked with in the press.

Mass buying works in cfootball manager, but nowhere else!

    • willy stonker says:

… so you’d want only 8 registered players of English origin (trained in England)? Doesn’t really seem like the way forward, especially selling the likes of Lennon, Defoe and Parker who all appear to have plenty left to offer imo, while any squad needs a few older heads/seasoned pros to keep their feet on the ground. And why the view that Ceballos, Couliballey, Carroll, Fryers etc. are ready for the first team? We have other good young players too I know (Falque, Lancaster, Archer etc.), but surely they need to prove themselves on loan in at least The Championship for at least half a season before getting onto the PL squad at Spurs, no? None of thos you’ve mentioned look like PL players yet from the little I’ve seen of them.

Also, I’m not sure how much you’ve seen of the transfer targets you’ve mentioned, but I can tell you that Ganso for £18m at this stage would be an utterly wreckless gamble as his form’s been very poor and he’s had some serious injuries over the past couple of seasons. I live in Brazil and watch Santos on TV when I can.

All in all, I think you’re a bit of a nutter and I’m glad you aren’t involved with the club! COYS!!!

    • willy stonker says:

…. and PS. GDS IS NOT A LEFT WINGER!!!!

  • bazza says:

A decent keeper but there are a number of good keepers some better and lower cost, Diego Lopez went for less than half that price, older yes but much better, Stekelenberg is reportedly around 2/3rd of that price and at this stage at least better
Lloris is still young as keepers go and can step up and would be a good addition but not necessarily the best or the best value

    • Andrew says:

This is very well said bazza. Stekelenberg would have also been my preference, but Levy makes the decisions. He seems keen to bring in a young keeper who is also his nation’s number 1 option with a big upside to him. I don’t mind that, but it seems to be taking us too long to make our final 3 or 4 signings. If we could offload Modric, we could play Gio Dos Santos behind the out out and out striker who maybe could be (realistically speaking) Leandro Damaio and maybe get Christian Atsu from Porto as his backup who can play good minutes off the bench as well as start some games against lesser opponents so we don’t overwork Damaio and risk him being injured.

  • Phix says:

We NEED to buy Lloris, he’s AWESOME. coys!

  • Nicholson 61 says:

Any top rated keeper, as Lloris is, is worth 8-12 points a season. That could be the difference
between automatic CL qualification or not! He would
    pay for himself!

  • PatNevin says:

Sick to death of this. Yes he’s a good keeper and yes, he’d be a welcome addition but how many more articles does there have to be on the subject? I’ve put this one in a box marked “bored to death” along with the Leandro Damiao stories.

  • rob thfc says:

agree but levy needs to spend big now i think we def need a keeper and hugo would b great and then we def need 2 fowards and i hope levy dont miss out on damiao he just needs to pay the money it takes to get him at whl.

  • webby says:

i agree with everyones opinion except 1– who would pay 3 mill for bassong?

  • DCP says:

I love the way people say sell so and so for this amount of money like it just that easy. If it was that easy would we still have Bentley at the club?

Llros is a good goalkeeper and we need another keeper soon, Friedel and Cudicini are coming towards the end of their careers and I think Gomes would have lost any confidence he had left from the season before last really… He was treated well by Harry as he got better towards the end of that season and played well, though stilla bit shakey.
