If you ask a Liverpool fan, they’ll tell you that they’ve got the best goalkeeper in the Premier League. Ask anybody else and they’ll tell you that Pepe Reina just isn’t as good as the Reds like to make out. Whilst he may well have been one of the world’s best a couple of seasons ago, his standards have slipped and mistakes have crept into his game. He’s still good, I’m just not sure that he’s great. Please feel free to tell me otherwise.

One thing’s for sure, with Brad Jones being granted permission to talk to Norwich regarding a transfer and with Peter Gulasci looking to secure a loan move to the Championship, it’s high time that Brendan Rodgers started lining up a few other options.

I just don’t think that Alexander Doni is good enough to step in when necessary. Pepe Reina needs an understudy that can be relied upon.

Which brings me to this story in The Metro: Team GB’s Jack Butland is at the top of Liverpool’s list of wanted goalkeepers. The Birmingham star has received a number of positive reports over the course of the last season and this has earned him a reputation for being one of the best young goalkeepers in the country.

Besides, wasn’t bringing in the best of young British talent Liverpool’s most recent transfer modus operandi? Why stop now?

At 19-years-old, Butland would represent a long-term solution to Liverpool’s goalkeeping problem. The youngster may well desire first-team action, but the chance to learn from Reina and be a part of Liverpool’s set-up may be a draw.

Price may be an issue. Southampton are reported to have failed to convince Birmingham to sell their keeper for £6m. Liverpool will have to offer more than this is they’re going to tempt the Blues to sell.

British talent doesn’t come cheap and he’s certainly got a big future ahead of him. He’s destined for a big club and I personally hope that Liverpool are the ones that snap him up. Rather than buy another experienced keeper, with Reina starting to slip, perhaps the time’s right to start looking forward. And I can’t think of a more forward-thinking signing than Jack Butland.

What’s your take? Would Jack Butland be a good addition at Anfield?

I agree that he would be an intelligent signing for LFC. After saying that naturally they won’t!

Get him and offload Doni and Jones to cut cost on player wages.
