I think by now it’s clear that Manchester United need a left-back. Whilst Patrice Evra remains a very important player, he’s slowing down pretty fast and may well only have a season or two left in him. As the months go by, the need will grow increasingly more pressing. It would be a shame if Manchester United were to end up dropping points because they focused on bolstering the midfield and the attack when dealing with the defence was just as important.

That’s not to play down the value of Robin Van Persie or Shinji Kagawa (or Nick Powell for that matter). It’s just to say that I hope Sir Alex Ferguson hasn’t forgotten that this is an area of the pitch he needs to look at.

Which is why I was glad to hear that Manchester United have been chasing Vitesse Arnhem’s Alexander Buttner. Great name and according to Sky Sports, he’s about to seal a move to Old Trafford!

The left-back, who is in the process of breaking into the Dutch international side, told the Press that he’s set to seal his dream move to Manchester United: “This is really a dream come true. It was all arranged very quickly and of course I am very delighted. Happily everything is coming to an end.”

At 23-years-old, he’s a player tipped for a big future. Whilst he doesn’t have the pedigree of a player like Leighton Baines (a long term transfer target for Sir Alex Ferguson), he’s got bags of potential. He’s a marauding forward who loves to get forward and aid the attack. He’s more than capable of providing ammunition for the likes of Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney. But you won’t catch him shirking on his defensive duties. He’s got a great reading of the game and he can put in a challenge.

He’s an extremely smart player and best of all, he won’t break the bank. Sky Sports claim the deal will cost United around £3.9m. That’s not too shabby, especially when you consider how much it would have cost to persuade Everton to sell Leighton Baines.

Whilst he’s not a marquee signing, he’s still an exciting one and one that will fulfil an important role in the squad. That’s yet another smart signing for Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United continue to go from strength to strength.

What’s your take? Would Alexander Buttner be a good addition for Manchester United?
