Could this £25m transfer target save Tottenham’s season?

|

Nobody does disappointment like Tottenham. After their two underwhelming opening fixtures turned up a loss and a draw, I’m sure that most fans are looking towards their club to make a few additions whilst the transfer window remains open. After all, as things currently stand, this Tottenham club doesn’t look to be capable of finishing in the top four. There’s plenty of work to be done.

Many fans are worried about how Spurs will cope without their midfield talisman Luka Modric picking out passes and running things from the centre of the park. Will Andre Villas-Boas’ boys be able to stand the heat?

Well, should Modric finally move on, Spurs will fare much better should they pull off the signing of FC Porto star Joao Moutinho. According to the Standard, Boas is keen to bring his ex-charge to White Hart Lane. They claim that Moutinho is keen to ply his trade in the Premier League, but that Tottenham are unwilling to pay Porto’s £25m asking price.

That’s a fair sum. Villas-Boas won’t spend that kind of money lightly. If he does splash that kind of cash on Moutinho, it’s because he knows the player well (better than any of us can claim to know him, for sure) and believes he’s worth it. It’s also worth bearing in mind that Porto aren’t exactly in a position where they have to sell and that’s going to inflate his price-tag.

Still, he’s a fully-fledged Portuguese international, known for his ability to craft a pass and support the attack. In his own way, he’s not unlike Luka Modric, but he’s also got a great engine on him. He’s a box-to-box player who loves to bomb forward and is sure to offer more goal-threat than the Croatian ever did.

Whilst I’ll be sad to see Luka Modric go, I can’t help but wonder if trading him for Moutinho could actually improve Tottenham. First off, having a player in the squad who clearly doesn’t want to be there is poisonous. Replacing him with somebody who’s raring to go and has the quality to make a difference could leave Spurs in a considerably better position.

Persuading FC Porto to sell will be a challenge, but it’s a task worth completing.

What’s your take? Would Joao Moutinho be a smart addition at White Hart Lane? Could he replace Luka Modric.

There is no point in signing him now. We have just got dembele, so where would moutinho fit in with bale, lennon, sandro, sig etc. We should of got him first instead of dembele.

Blimey the ability to write English is greater than the ability to think coherently. Bitter-deluded?
Take it you don’t rate Levy and no doubt would welcome Irving Scholar back. Obviously to young to remember when the bank almost owned the club or too challenged to understand how finances and the long term future of the club has had to be safeguarded. Yep-guess the grown up world can be difficult for some.

Getting desperate for something new to say? Save our season after 2 games? Good joke, made me laugh. But for serious contributions concerning football I’ll try elsewhere!

  • ollyparklane says:

Save our season? Seriously?? After 2 games??? What a load of absolute shite… Get real and get behind the team. Tsk

  • Maybe Juande says:

Modric gave us 4 years and a 16 million odd profit. Great player but disnt score enough goals for me, he shined a great many shots into the corner flag. Moutinho would be fantastic addition. Come on make it happen!
