A £6m bargain that Liverpool can’t afford to miss out on?

The Clint Dempsey to Liverpool transfer rumour seems to have an endless supply of legs. Try cutting one off. Two more will grow back in its place. And then it’ll continue to scuttle its way towards its inevitable conclusion. Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that he’s interested in the player and may well have the chutzpah to persuade Fulham to sell their talisman.

Liverpool fans have heard a lot about the American attacking midfielder over the course of the summer. The latest news, according to Goal.com sources, is that Dempsey told Martin Jol that he did not wish to be a part of Fulham’s week-long trip to Switzerland. His focus, it appears, is on securing a move to Liverpool.

This has raised claims that he’s doing a ‘Robin Van Persie’ or ‘Luka Modric’ and trying to force a move. He certainly doesn’t have RVP’s excuse that he’s worn out from his endeavours in Euro 2012.

For all the talk this summer, it looks like things are coming to a head. So is Liverpool’s interest in the marauding midfielder justified and should they attempt to bring him to the club?

According to Goal.com, his age and contract situation mean that Liverpool could snap him up for just £5-6m. Now that strikes me as a bargain.

The Reds were consistently short on goals last season. Dempsey would provide these, and then some. Last season he scored 23 goals from the midfield in 46 appearances. Figures that most strikers would love to register.

But he offers more than just goals. He’s got bundles of experience – 179 appearances for Fulham and 83 appearances for the US. He’s strong in the air, quick along the ground and is capable of shouldering the creative burden in the midfield. All in all, he’s a top all-round midfielder.

So couldn’t Dempsey do a job at a club like Liverpool, who look a little short of quality in midfield? Some fans are a little snobbish when it comes to bringing in players who have stood out in ‘smaller clubs’, but I can’t help but feel that Dempsey would excel if given an opportunity to make the step up. If there’s any real concern just look at the way Antonio Valencia developed after moving to United from Wigan.

It’s clear that he’s looking for an escape route. I can’t help but feel that Liverpool should make their interest concrete and provide him with one.

At £5M+ then I agree he would be a “useful” addition to the side. Any amount over this then no.

  • supersub says:

Fourth top scorer in the Premier League and you don’t think he’s worth more than £5 million? Really?

At most #10M. Play him upfront Suarez-Borini-Dempsey/Gaston with Lucas-Gerrard-Henderson/Allen and our usaul backline and Reina. Not bad with the talent coming up from academy.

  • N says:

Yeah that figure is spot on to be fair, considering he is in last 12. Months of contract. I’d welcome him to lfc. He is a good premier league player. Very determined and works for the team. He is like kuyt in this respect but adds more goals to his game. Definite improvement to our stagnant midfield/ attack.

Try asking Arsene Wenger if he thinks he should sell Van Persie for a giveaway price just because he has only one year left on his contract.

The reality is that any of these players could buy out their remaining 12 months and leave on a free – in that way, Dempsey, RVP et al could move to the club of their dreams with only nominal fees being paid. RVP would cost about £4.5m to buy out and Dempsey half that! So when Arsenal say they won’t sell for less than £30m, they’re dreaming!

Players don’t want to buy themselves out as a) they have to shell out the cash but also they lose out on lucrative sell on rights – but I could see both of these players (and others) doing it if clubs maintain their aggressive stances. The power of contracts is firmly in the hands of the employee/footballer. Live with it and move on!

Sometimes selling when a player who is in his last year is better than losing the player 12 months later for nothing. depends on how you like losing the millions and how much you think they might earn you in the 12 months that you keep them. Sometimes their sorrow hurts the team moral!

Liverpool should definately buy Dempsey. Adam,Henderson,Downing and Carrol proved to be flops and they should all be sold.I wonder if Daglish was in his right frame of mind when he spent so much on buying these useless players.I just hope that Rodgers acts more intellectually and has more insight when buying players. We definately need quality players to get back to the top, where we deserve to be.

    Reina
    Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique
    Gerrard Lucas Allen
    Ramirez Borini Suarez

    • bashier says:

hendo and downing is not half the player dempsey is.
give one of them for exchange
we can still make carrol and charlie a liverpool minded teammate
aquaman is good but seems to be too light for the premiere league, hey who knows

  • Buddah says:

I thought exactly the same as steve, but if we don’t get allen- I could see more this:
    Reina
    Johnson Agger Skrtel Enrique
    Gerrard. Lucas. Ramirez.
    Dempsey Borini. Suarez.
