Now that’s more like it: Liverpool linked to Serie A Superstar

Liverpool had a pretty shoddy time of things last season. Carling Cup glory aside, it was an absolutely torrid time, full of Premier League misery. The players just didn’t gel as a unit and although plenty of chances were created, the Red’s strikers just didn’t put them away. Both Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez were guilty of fluffing their lines and it’s clear that plenty of work needs to be done this summer in order to get Liverpool competitive once more.

So it’s been disappointing to see the Red’s linked to players like Clint Dempsey (good player, but getting on), Demba Ba (finished last season poorly) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (good player, but I’m not sure he’s what Liverpool needed).

Didn’t Liverpool used to get linked to world football’s best and brightest? What happened?

[ad_pod id=’DFP-MPU’]

This brings me to Corriere dello Sport’s claim that Liverpool are going to launch a £17m bid for Fiorentina’s star attacker Steven Jovetic. Whilst he’s not an out-and-out striker, he’s used to playing behind the leading man and managed an impressive 14 goals from 27 appearances last season. That’s round about a quarter of the total number of goals managed by Liverpool’s entire team last year.

The Red’s need a blast of inspiration and Jovetic’s the kind of talented, dynamic young thing that fans can really get behind. He would represent the kind of signing that could pump belief back into the club and help them attract more of European football’s best player. He’s certainly the kind of player that could help guide Liverpool back to Champions League football.

And at 22-years-old, he’s a long way away from his peak. Whilst he already cuts an impressive figure, he’s only going to get better. As he gets better, his price-tag is only going to raise. It’s up to Brendan Rodger’s to strike early and grab him whilst he’s still affordable. £17m isn’t that much when you consider how much players of his potential tend to cost in the current transfer market.

He’s not just a good player, he’s the kind of player Liverpool need to spur them back into life. Rodgers has said all the right things since taking over as manager, but the proof will be in the pudding. Let’s hope that he makes the right move!

What’s your take? Would you have Steven Jovetic at Anfield?

  • Damo says:

For starters, ‘Reds’ in our case doesn’t take an apostrophe, his name is Stevan and I heard this last week. ‘price-tag’? More like hyphen-disabled!

  • Damo says:

Demo the spell king, jog on.

  • kengkinny says:

I don`t think you are right in putting down Sigurdsson and eulogizing Jovetic. Sigurdsson produced a similar number of goals and assists per time played as Jovetic in the last 2 years, and he did it from an ACM position.

Jovetic is overrated and 17M is way too much for him IMO. You can get Sturridge for that amount and still have enough left over to buy a decent DM.

    • royce says:

You obviously never saw what Jovetic did to us in the CL a number of years ago he is a dynamo.
Do not worry about the goals he has struggled a little with injury he will be even better too in a good side.
Gylfi is not in the same class as this fellow he will be the clubs best buy in a fair while.

  • Dbol says:

On that picture he looks like Stuart Downing with a wooley head

  • Martin Badger says:

Strange to see a very fine player like Clint Dempsey dismissed in such cavalier fashion. He is way better than anyone in Liverpool’s midfield. Sadly, that now includes Stevie, who is way, but way, past his best.

    • Rick says:

      Martin you are a tool!

      • Martin Badger says:

And you are clearly an intelligent sort of chap who has a fine use of the English language. It’s a pleasure to cross swords with such an intellectual. If you don’t know Stevie is way past his best then you probably never saw him a few years ago.

    • GF says:

      Are you a yank?

      • Martin Badger says:

Not only am I not a yank but I have nothing but contempt for that country and it’s policies of unending aggression. However, that doesn’t blind me to the fact that Dempsey will outscore the entire LFC midfield again in all probability. Well, if you can call it a midfield.

        • Paul says:

Dempsey is an average player who had one good season at the end of his career. Why being American has anything to do with it i really don’t know, fact is if he was half as good as Gerrard is we would go in for him but he isn’t, to believe he’s better than Gerrard is farcical and very stupid. Yes Gerrard is passed his best but his best was that good he is still a fabulous player and so again i must stress this fact, Dempsey is average, Gerrard is class, Liverpool too good for average, Dempsey will never play for a decent team, why, he’s average. Otherwise wouldn’t better teams be in for him?? It’s not rocket science

    • benko says:

the same Gerrard that was named in the European team Dempsey is good but good in an average team we seen it all with this type of players 1 great season he is better than Gerrard ha! your very dumb suggestin he being better than Gerrard jus after the Euros

  • Brad says:

Wow…looks like we have a grammar nazi amongst us! Who cares?
And Dempsey is too old and too expensive for the Liverpool project. I would take him but maybe for 5 million at the most. He is certainly not as good as Steven Gerrard or Lucas but you are entitled to your opinion Martin.

Re;Stevan Jovetic…I would be thrilled to see him or Gaston Ramirez at Anfield..or both for that matter. Just what we need.

    • Damo says:

Nope, not grammar, spelling, huge difference, which you’d know if english was your first language. Seriously though, if you’re going to put up posts, you could at least get the name of the player right, not to mention the name of the team you support. The story should probably be recent as well. I heard this last week. On to Jovetic though, he destroyed us a few seasons ago when we were killed home and away by Fiorentina. Can play up front or in midfield. Get him if possible!

      • Paul says:

        Dear Damo.

You are a nob and your mum smells like urine. I also hear you where the first chap to be concieved orally and birthed anally. Is this correct? Please check my spelling, grammer and any other nonsense you deem worthy of your time.

        Kind regards.

        Paul.

        • Martin Badger says:

Oh dear! I’m afraid it’s not correct, no. Mistakes everywhere, in fact. e.g. You should have written ‘were’ and not ‘where’ and ‘grammar’ and not ‘grammer’. You have spelled the word ‘conceived’ incorrectly too. If you were in my class you would be in detention for this.

    • Martin Badger says:

Dempsey not as good as Lucas? Comments like that make me understand just how much LFC fans deserve their failure. One guy scores goals for fun and the other can do precisely nothing. Can’t dribble, can’t head, can’t score, can’t make telling passes. Yep, Lucas is a huge zero. When will the kopites stop living in cloud-cuckoo land and come down to earth? They consistently overrate their players – like Mr Blunder Reina – and then can’t understand why their results are so crap.

      • Paul says:

If Dempsey was betterthan Lucas he wouldn’t be playing for Fulham numbnutz. Without Lucas Liverpool struggled last season and being a red and watching every game last season it was evident that what we needed so much was Lucas Leiva, he’s a massive player for us. He also is a regular Brazil international and are we really to believe that if Dempsey was from Brazil he would get into the squad never mind the team….Nope!

Your clearly a bloody idiot and have no place commenting on something you don’t understand. Stick to US sports, the sports nobody else other than the US care about and leave football to those of us who were brought up to understand it

        • Damo says:

Danny Murphy, a player most think we should never have sold, plays for Fulham, as does Duff who we tried to get, your dismissive attitude shows you for the boor you were brought up as when your mother stuck her finger down her throat. BTW it’s knob, were, conceived and grammar, you ignoramus!

        • Damo says:

That’s ‘you’re’ as in you’re forgetting I ordered a strawberry shake with my Big Mac meal!

        • Martin Badger says:

Let me explain a couple of things really simply – because I suspect complications are beyond you. First of all, I am not American and have no desire to be. Secondly, I saw my first match at Anfield in november ’66 – a 5 – 0 whitewashing of Leeds. I was there when we played Everton in two F.A. Cup semis, when we put out Barcelona, when we beat St Etienne, when we beat Bruges etc etc. You were there when we drew at home to Norwich and Blackburn last season. You say Dempsey wouldn’t be playing for Fulham if he was any good – well Henderson is playing for us. What does that say about us? You are a typical LFC imbecile – the type of ‘fan’ who thinks he knows football and actually knows sod all.

    • Damo says:

So, players we’ve already been linked with? Great, thanks for your contribution!

  • Wozza says:

Yes this guy and ramirez ! around 40 mill but we will sell more this summer i hope to recoup some

  • RedRoy says:

Would be a good buy, but, not a chance.

  • peter says:

Please Mr BR think he can achieve all goals wth these team let’s wait and see how he will fall because those stricker will diserpoint him and it will fostrate the good one we have and that will force they to go and his own carrie will also be distrol but to may own oppinior is that I don’t think we need stricker from italy becos they alway strogle in the English football.Mr (go to french league or potugish league but you most bring if not 2 at least one world standerd goal scoring stricker

  • mega serie a fan says:

Jovetic is really an excellent player.. Without a shadow of a doubt one for the future. Got to give him 2 seasons in the EPL though. 13-14M looks more like it.

  • Jay says:

Martin is a jock strap , move on havnt you got an English class student to “give a good telling off” campaign Lucas to Dempsey in that fashion is way off, they play different roles in there teams .

    • Damo says:

? Translation? Campaign? Comparing maybe? Bit rich calling someone else a jock strap when you can’t even express yourself in a comprehesible fashion. Dempsey has played well for a few seasons now, has an eye for goal and I can see why Martin would want him, but at 29, I’d go £7m only. As for Stevie, he’s getting on a bit, not the same impact as he had, you could argue that Dempsey has been the more effective player this season

      • Damo says:

And comparing him to Lucas is a bit silly. Dempsey is an attacker, Lucas a destroyer

        • Martin Badger says:

Yep, he destroys any hope you have of building anything up. Of course, to LFC fans he’s Pirlo, Iniesta and Xavi rolled into one. Actually, he’s the living proof that not all people in Brazil are good at football.

      • Paul says:

I believe what you intended to spell was comprehensible. It was a tremendous effort but you were, in fact, incorrect.

Also, you really shouldn’t start a sentence with ‘And’. It shows not only that you are not as clever as you try so hard to make out, but also that you are probably a 4’10”, bald, closet homo.

        Am I accurate?

        • Damo says:

No, that was your date last night.

        • Martin Badger says:

There are many occasions when it is acceptable to start a sentence with the word ‘and.’ That is a very old idea like the one about never ending a sentence with a preposition.

    • Martin Badger says:

Jay, can’t make too much sense of that due to the errors. I sympathise – English is a tricky language.

  • Paul says:

    ————Reina————-

    Johnson–Agger–Skrtel-Enrique

    ——-Gerrard—Lucas——–

    ———–Ramirez————

    —–Cole———-Suarez—–

    ———–Sturidge———–

As it stands Aquilani for Ramirez and Carroll for Sturridge, the rest is poetic licence.

    • Damo says:

Hmm, thought Ramirez was a winger? Has he played in the hole before? Your date last night has, ‘cos your mum told me you were easy!

  • Steven says:

Jovetic, Ramirez and players of this caliber are exactly what we need

I am tearing out my hair in despair at modern education. Whatever became of the days when one basic ESSENTIAL for a career in journalism was a comprehensive understanding of spelling, grammar and syntax?
The days when a journalist who began a sentence with a preposition or conjunction, inserted an apostrophe into a plural, or omitted an apostrophe from a possessive pronoun, earned at the very least a severe censure.
I mourn for the days when a debate could be conducted rationally, without resorting to gutter language and unwarranted personal insults, directed against total strangers simply because they disagreed with a particular point of view.

A striking example of poor grammar and inadequate understanding, compounded by ignorance and personal insult is the following:-

“Also, you really shouldn’t start a sentence with ‘And’. It shows not only that you are not as clever as you try so hard to make out, but also that you are probably a 4’10?, bald, closet homo.

    Am I accurate?”

Surely if this respondent is as educated as he would have us believe, he would KNOW that the word ‘also’, like the words ‘and’ and ‘but’, should never be used to start a sentence

    • FFC says:

You and Damo seem like you’d be really fun guys to hang out with.

Spelling a player’s name wrong is an egregious error, but it’s not worth getting worked up over.

Also, the belief that you should never start a sentence with ‘And’ or ‘But’ is extremely outdated and not given much credence nowadays.
