Could Arsenal really hi-jack this £20m long-term Manchester United transfer target?

Since Cesc Fabregas left the club last summer, Arsenal have been crying out for a creative midfielder. Jack Wilshere hasn’t played a game since the Spaniard left. Aaron Ramsey has looked out of sorts. Mikel Arteta is consistent, but doesn’t always deliver the ‘killer ball’. When you’re relying on a defensive midfielder (in this case Alex Song) to provide the team with a creative spark, you know you’re somewhat lacking.

Whilst Song’s over-the-top balls were a highlight of last season, Arsenal surely have to take action over this issue. Though their midfield is pretty crowded, there’s a couple of passengers and a couple of constant injury doubts, so it makes sense for Arsene Wenger to look to bring someone else in. I can’t help but hope that he’s scouring the transfer market for potential targets at this very moment.

Which brings me to this link courtesy of Yahoo Sports: it’s claimed that Arsene Wenger is planning to move for Dutch play-maker Wesley Sneijder once he’s sold Robin Van Persie.

Looks like Arsenal are looking to keep it Dutch. Their captain recently released a statement which made it clear that he wouldn’t be signing a new contract because he wasn’t satisfied with the direction of the club. Wouldn’t it be ironic if his sale funded the exact kind of transfer that he wants to see Arsenal making?

Despite a variety of problems last season, the Inter Milan star remains a marquee name. Yahoo claim he’d cost the Gunners just £20m because he’s not a nailed on part of Andrea Stramaccioni’s system. This seems a little off the mark. The Nerazzurri know what Sneijder offers them and they still value him highly. Yes he’s 28-years-old now, but he’s still got 3-4 years left at the peak of his game. It’s not easy to nail down exactly how much he’d cost.

But after seeing his side finish sixth place in Serie A last season, Sneijder may be ready for a new challenge and as he’s never played in the Premier League, may fancy giving that a go. Whether or not that’ll be with Arsenal is a different matter.

Wesley Sneijder has been heavily linked to Manchester United for the last couple of summers. At one point, his moving to Old Trafford looked like a sure thing. Whilst this talk has cooled down, it’s still difficult to see Sneijder opting to move to the Emirates instead of joining up with Fergie’s title-chasing side.

But what a signing it would be if Arsene can pull it off. He’s the genuine article and he fulfils a role that Arsenal need to look at.

What’s your take? Would Sneijder fit in at the Emirates?

hope its true, FOLLOW ME @KYEKYE45

  • Bob A says:

I would rather see M’vila come in as a holding midfielder and allow Song to go further up , then is lack of cover in defence is not so much of an issue.

  • Judith Le'Strange says:

I can’t really see Wenger nor Arsenal splashing £20m on one player, Wenger would rather go for a cheaper option who will look good at times and then disappear off the scene and be sold after a couple of years, just like Chamakh and the rest of the dead beats that Wenger has purchased over the years and who are eating into our transfer money because they are on such high wages no other club wants to buy them.

    • goonergeezer says:

I think your’re right Judith, i couldn’t see Arsenal spending 20m on one player, but also he’s wages would be out of our price range, at the start of last season when Man utd were sniffing around him it was reported he would want 200k a week to join them!

      • joonneessyy says:

True but even when good players go cheap we do not always sign them like debuchy 6 million we need a cover for sagna n yet were not even in the race to sign him if rvp stays we dont need a cam we need mvilla and anpther cb

  • Michael says:

Prof if you can’t get M’villa or Ganso, then he is the right man we currently lack.

  • Hamid says:

He is the missing part of Wenger’s jigsaw.

  • Nic says:

Wages are the reason this lovely idea won’t happen.

  • covenant says:

Na 2dayaa plzzz pls prof stop all dis linking on very player and us a better players before transfer windom close. Up gunners 1 luv.

  • Hanif zubair nigeria says:

It’s not occur to me wenger in his life buy
player dat worth such amount untill will realise dat wenger and stan.k are conspire together to relagate arsenal from major league a good coach wil not
buy player like chamark, squlach,Aroy Ramay Garvinho and wenger has turn arsenal to be france tradition despite parading france players still they more or less him are the end of day pl’s Mr wenger go out and buy good player for us will are tired of economise.

  • Tom says:

Sneijder’s move to Utd last summer broke down over his wage demands. At Inter, he is on a reported 150k+ a week and he will want a RVP sized contract!

Hence … no chance for us! Always remember, and especially these days, the wages are the main transfer determinant, not cost. Ad€b£yor is a perfect example. Citeh are willing to give him away for $5m* even though he has another 3 yrs on his contract and is one of the biggest cunts around… sorry, one of the top strikers in the world. And they are STILL having to subsidise his wages!

    * meaning also we lose out on sell-on clause.

  • elvi says:

we can get this guy for less then 8m if wenger make a good move.no way he worth 20m.

    • Tom says:

He’s a world cup finalist and champions league winner, where he was the focal point and creative playmaker of both teams, he is, at 28, in the prime of his career, and is nowhere near the end of his contract.

On what planet is he worth £8m?????????????

      • joonneessyy says:

Agree with u tom he is in the top 5 playmakers in the world 20million is a steal where the hell u got 8million from its like saying rvp with 1 yr on contract is worth 3 million i think this lad plays too much fifa

  • Joe Blewett says:

He’s a great player, looking for a title winning club so Man.U look like the club for him. If Wenger can pull it off then that will get the fans in their good books again.

  • Mick goober says:

If only. If we could sell arshavin, bendtner, chamak, Denilson, park, and the rest of the dead wood and invest that in m’villa and sneijder with the rest of the money we have lying around then there’s a good chance rvp would sign. Then we would challenge for the league.
However this has been the case for the last 6 years. We’re always 2-3 quality players away from challenging. We just won’t go for it.

  • Anjon (NGR) says:

We Arsenal fans will b much happy if Arsenal can try to bring in Sneijder and villa to the squard.

  • Gazza_5 says:

Dream on. Never gonna happen. Look at real life, not FM ’12. Arsene will not sanction a £20m+ transfer fee, and wages of £150,000 per week. Stupid article, stupid responses. Any of you that think we’ll spend big are idiots that have not watched what happens at Arsenal under this board and manager.

  • dboy says:

PlEASE STOP WRITING NONSENSE !!!! THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

  • FREEMAN says:

Nawao,u guys dnt hav 2mak comment on dis speculation bc i no wenger values money dt dt ll b an economic waste buyin sniejder.ts neva posible wt d wage and transfer fee

  • Umar says:

Yes we need him. I cant wait to see sneijder in arsenal colour cos he is a fantastic midfielder.

  • Umar says:

    Arsen bring sneijder pls

  • Paul says:

Not in a milion years if the fans could pick the players who are bouhgt then its a yes if arsene picks the players then hell will freeze over first.

Nice thought but never going to happen.

  • CHOMEN says:

Wenger,I have spend most of my time watchin arsenal matches, pls I will like 2 ce m’villa n sneidjer in emirate pls,I don’t want arsenal 2 go trophiless dis season biko(please)stop economisin money, just try it n ce if RVP won’t sign a new deal.
