When SPL members met it was a mere inevitability that those who had recently publicised that they would do as their own fans wanted, would carry forward this intent. In all honest, the Ranger’s debacle has gone on long enough.

If it were anyone outwith the Old Firm then it would have been dealt with by now. There has been much fear mongering surrounding the eventual and very possible demotion of Rangers to the 4th tier of Scottish football. Sky apparently will pull out of their current deal or severely under cut its original estimate based on the previous guarantee of 4 Old Firm games per  season if Rangers are out with the SPL for more than one season. On top of all this, there will apparently be as many of 6 to 8 SPL clubs said to go into administration as a direct consequence of Rangers’ plight to the 3rd division.

However, what everyone needs to remember is that no matter the SPL’s private woes the SFL will surely flourish with Rangers starting life anew at the bottom of Scotland’s footballing pile. There has long been an armchair culture of Old Firm support within the Scottish game. Those who would rather pledge allegiance to one of either Celtic or Rangers when they could be putting money into the coffers of their local hometown team.

The best thing for Scottish football is that those who support Rangers from as far afield as Inverness to Berwick may be inclined to abandon the away stand of their local teams and join in with their local support. Even if they still choose to “follow follow” the Gers at the very least it will guarantee a sell out away section every time those too lazy to travel to Ibrox await the visit of their heroes in blue to their hometown. Also we cannot forget that all teams will sell out their home tickets as a result of simply being able to advertise that they will host Rangers in what would have otherwise been an  unimaginable fixture. This would of course repeat year on year with Rangers assumed consecutive ascension to each tier of the Scottish game. The aftermath of such a cash injection from Rangers would leave the normally impoverished lower divisions enriched out of all this financial “meltdown”.

We need to also consider that even if the SPL faces half of its members entering administration as a result of all of this financial ruin, we could well see those clubs rise again like Rangers in the3rd division whilst the healthy  clubs could join a bolstered 1st division and simply scrap the SPL altogether. Admittedly that would require a massive overhaul with 3 normally conflicted governing bodies each with their own opinions.

Needless to say the situation here in Scotland is perilous. However with Rangers now awaiting what seems to be the 3rd division we may well be bearing witness to the greatest footballing revolution in a generation.
