When it comes to Manchester United there’s an awful lot of talk concerning Lucas Moura. I understand why the level of excitement concerning the youngster is so high. He’s Brazil’s latest hot young thing, has talent and potential to burn and looks like he’s going to develop into a world-beater. He may offer that midfield dynamism that Anderson has never quite managed to produce. So I’m not surprised that fans are watching this transfer saga unfurl with such rapt attention.

I am surprised, however, that United fans don’t share similar levels of excitement at the prospect of signing Belgium talent Axel Witsel. At 23-years-old he’s slightly further along his development stream than Moura, but offers similar levels of potential. As a result of his excellent performances for Benfica last season, both Manchester United and AC Milan have signalled their interest.

That’s according to Goal.com, who provide quotes from Benfica coach Luis Felipe Vieira: “Every club knows what his release clause is, if they come here and pay that fee, then there is nothing that we can do. We are very happy with Witsel and we do not think about selling him.”

Most have interpreted these claims as meaning that United would have to meet Witsel’s £31m release clause before Benfica agree to sell. Though they’re not thinking about selling him, there’s nothing to suggest that they won’t should the right offer come in.

Belgium has become a real hot bed of talent over the last couple of years. Whilst most fans will point to Eden Hazard as the clearest example of this, Witsel deserves some consideration. He picked up the Belgian Young Footballer of the Year award back in 2007-08 and the Belgian Golden Shoe in 2008. He’s found success with both Standard Liege and Benfica.

He’s a sprightly figure, who’s tricky feet, pace and confidence have become a real asset in the centre of the park. With Manchester United on the hunt for another midfielder and somebody with the talent and the ability to dominate games, it wouldn’t surprise me if they turned to Witsel. Whilst he’s not quite ready to pick up Scholes’ mantle, he’s shown more than enough potential to suggest that he may do so in the future.

Benfica seem to be holding on for somebody to come in with a big bid. I can’t help but feel like he’d be a good investment for Manchester United. Maybe even as good as that Lucas Moura chap everybody seems to be banging on about!

What’s your take? Would Axel Witsel be a good addition to the squad? Or is he too expensive?
