Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger clash once more today at Old Trafford, with Manchester United the favourites

A worrying trait that is starting to emerge in all football leagues is the constant recycling of football managers if they do not start winning straight away.

The most ruthless cut throat team that does this to managers is the recent Champions League winners and Premier League powerhouse Chelsea FC. They have managed to go through seven different managers since the year 2000. It is laughable, especially since the managers that have been fired have actually won trophies.

During the 2009-2011 season, Italian Carlo Ancelotti managed to win; One Premier League trophy, One Community Shield, & One FA Cup. A respectable achievement in this space of time, though ironically, he was sacked. Another manager named Andre Villas Boas was brought in after, who cruelly lasted for less than 8 months in charge. Post-sacking he was still paid tens of millions of pounds for his contract, which beckons the question, why not keep him longer for him to make an impact? Not only was his downfall in England embarrassingly spread over the media, but rumours emerged that the players didn’t respect him anymore and that was the final straw for Chelsea Owner Roman Abramovich, and terminated Villas – Boas’s 4-year contract prematurely.

Managers are under immense pressure to start winning immediately or face the backlash from fans, players, owners, and most of all the media. Once one of these four areas has been affected it wont take long before the second, third , and eventually fourth are all affected. However there are examples of clubs that show great faith in their managers regardless of their success.

Two examples of this are Arsene Wenger, Manager to Arsenal FC, & Sir Alex Ferguson, Manager of Manchester United. Since 2005, Arsene Wenger hasn’t been able to bring silverware back to the club. His ability to train young talent and produce them into fine professionals is the best in the business, the style which he encourages his team to play is memorizing at times, and his eye for spotting talent from around the world is second to none. Such players as French star Theirry Henry Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, and current Arsenal ace Theo Walcott, have all been pupils to him. He is regarded as a one of the best managers in the world by many, but Arsene Wenger believes Sir Alex Ferguson is currently the world best. Having won; 12 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cups, 4 League Cups, 2 Champions Leagues, 1 FIFA World Cup, 1 UEFA Super Cup, 1 UEFA Super Cup, 1 Inter-continental Cup, & 9 Community Shields, and a host of personal accolades he is seen as the pinnacle of managerial perfection during his 26 year reign as Manchester United boss. Even though he has been successful in the past he has not always won, yet he is kept there, and the reward for being kept there was the most prestigious title of all. The World’s best football manager.

Managers must be given time to show their full potential, this habit of firing someone after a few months of working with a new team of players and staff is not only unfair but sends the wrong message about the way a club is run.
