Liverpool’s summer transfer activity: are we up or down?

So far it has been a crazy summer for clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea, with the Gunners securing deals for Lukas Podolski and Oliver Giroud but set to lose out on Robin Van Persie (Source: His official website) and most likely Nicklas Bendtner (Source: Daily Mail). Chelsea have secured the services of Eden Hazard and Marko Marvin and are close to getting Hulk (Source: The Metro) but have lost veteran striker Didier Drogba, who will move to Shanghai and have also opted to let Salomon Kalou and Jose Bosingwa leave without renewing their contract.

Brendan Rodgers has had his first training session at Melwood and had a long discussion with the players. So he has had time to set his priorities. So what is are the targets he plans to bring in for the new season at Liverpool? Here are the Reds most promising targets or newly linked:

Recent Rumors: Gaston Ramirez has probably been the player who has had strong rumors of an Anfield move, Bologna have reported contact from Liverpool for the services of the young Uruguay international, and the player himself has shown interest to move to Liverpool (Source: The Express). Luis Suarez, Andy Carroll, Martin Skrtel have also featured in the recent news with possible moves away from Liverpool. Demba Ba has also been lined up as a target (though the player has played down any such link) and Juventus are trying to bring in Suarez for a deal worth 15m PLUS Milos Krasic (worth 10m).

Strongly Linked Players: Gaston Ramirez (Bologna), Demba Ba(Newcastle United), Mark Davies (Bolton), Luuk De Jong (FC Twente), Milos Krasic (Juventus), Jan Klaas Huntelaar (Schalke), Adam Johnson (Manchester City), Cristian Tello (Barcelona), Ibrahim Afellay (Barcelona), Clint Dempsey (Fulham).

Possible Arrivals: Out of all the midfielders, I see Ramirez as the best bet and a very possible deal, given the players interest in the club and national teammates in the Liverpool line-up.

Long Shots: De Jong, Afellay are realistic targets (Source: Daily Mail) but would be very difficult to get due to the many suitors. The Krasic deal may also fall through because Liverpool will not part with Suarez. As you all know I have been a huge fan of De Jong so I hope he moves to Liverpool.

Possible Departures: I don’t really see any move for Skrtel, Suarez, Carroll and Agger as they have all expressed the ambitions at Liverpool next season.

Losing out on: Sigurdsson, this is a deal I was so sure of, but instead he chose Spurs over Liverpool. While we are all very confident that wages were the reason behind it, Sigurdsson says it was the ambitions of the club that led him to White Hart lane. Why anyone would chose a club where the ambitions (Champions league football) are the same as Liverpool, and to add to that Brendan Rodgers managing the Reds makes it very obvious, Sigurdsson was in it for the money. Although I do feel he will regret this decision when he is left as a bench warmer.

The decision of Sigurdsson could come as a blessing in disguise because it makes a Ramirez move more possible, who by far is a much better and faster player than Sigurdsson.

Since when has Skrtel said he wants to stay? He said he was disappointed with Liverpool’s abysmal League form, and any player would choose Tottenham over Liverpool… Why would you want to go to a team that struggles for top eight? Not a Tottenham fan but a Juventus one. You need to take off your Liverpool tinted glasses mate. Forza Juve!

Any player would choose Tottenham over Liverpool? I wonder why Suarez chose Liverpool when Tottenham was interested in him at the same time….and for the matter…Suarez chose to stay instead of leaving for Juventus..

Hey, I’m a Juve fan too. My daughter plays for their girls’ team. Lovely city, Turin.

Players not choose to stay/play for a club for league position only. Like few years back when Juve was busted for purchasing the Seria A title & was kicked down to Seria B, not all players left the Old Lady.

nesti, what have you been smoking? Liverpool to buy wilshere? Made me chuckle

I don’t see such big changes. Johnson is nothing special, but Ramirez would be a good addition. I’m concerned about losing Skrtel, but Coates could step up. No chance Suarez will leave, but I believe there is a question mark about Reina. At least Lucas will be back, and I wouldn’t mind giving Aquillqni a chance, but Cole has lost it. I’d rather have Carroll than Ba.

    • lezdefez says:

For me Cole needs a second chance. Last season at lille went well for him. He came to us at the worst time, Roy in charge, Gillette n hicks causing havoc, then a new manager in kenny. All that disruption unsettles players. Now things are more settled, he can build on last season’s confidence booster, definitely worth a try

  • Nigel says:

Wilshere?! Cone on dude! I hope we get gaston Ramirez at the very least. Id give downing another shot at it this season. Cole and aqualani – we are lumbered with them cos they are on big contacts so we may as well use them as we are in Europa league. Hope we sell though. Id take £10m for both- get them off the books. Premier league should be absolute priority. Adam Johnson would be a great addition- may bring the best out of downing having that competition? Need another defensive midfielder/playmaker to help Lucas. Ander Herrera looks good if you watch la liga. Need another forward too who knows where the net is.
    In: Ramirez
    Adam Johnson/Willian
    Stevan Jovetic/ Alan d’zagoev

  • Paul says:

Ramirez would be a fantastic signing and would settle in quickly with Suarez and Coates at the club. Aquilani is class and we should definitely keep him – him & Suarez would be a great combination!

De Jong would be a good signing as well, although Newcastle have put a lot of groundwork in already. We definitely need another striker and right winger.
