Is AVB repeating his Chelsea mistakes at Tottenham?

|

Andre Villas-Boas joined the White Hart Lane club this summer following the sacking of Harry Redknapp, with many fans sceptical about the new managerial appointment, and weather he’d learned from the mistakes he made that ultimately lost him the Chelsea hot seat.

Many credit his demise at Stamford Bridge to the 34 year old taking on the senior players in the dressing room, and creating a player revolt which affected team morale and performances on the pitch. AVB embarked on rebuilding Chelsea, bringing in youth and dropping players such as Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole. Results stuttered and following countless reports of ongoing battles with players, Roman Abramovich pulled the plug on Villas-Boas after just eight months in charge.

When joining the North London club, AVB stressed that he felt like a changed man and more importantly confessed to have ‘learnt lessons from his mistakes during his Chelsea experience’ however, the Portuguese boss has already publicly slammed two players at his new club.

Villas-Boas slammed want-away midfielder Luka Modric as unprofessional and made it public knowledge that the player was under club discipline and would be finned wages for not attending the club’s pre season tour of the US.

Some Spurs fans would have been shocked to read about the actions of the playmaker, after constant speculation over his future in previous transfer windows, the manager at the helm at the time Harry Redknapp continuously pointed out in the media that the player remained professional and committed to playing football at all times throughout the speculation.

However strongly Spurs fans would fell that the Croatian is to blame for the situation after practically going on strike, it raises doubts of AVB once more, and whether he had to publicly criticise the midfielder and talking openly about his potential transfer away from the club.

Another midfielder at the club that has been slammed by the new man in charge is Giovani Dos Santos. The Mexican currently on duty for his national side at the Olympics has endured a frustrating time at Spurs, making only 30 appearances since his transfer in 2008. Dos Santos angered AVB after ruling out a stay at the club after his contract expires in a years time. Vilas-Boas has been quoted in the media as being puzzled and not quite sure what the player’s thought process was when coming out with such a statement.

To succeed at Spurs, AVB will need the entire dressing room behind his strategies and will need to learn fast that certain situations and sanctions by the club must be dealt with and kept ‘in house’. As we’ve seen countless times in football, once player unrest within the dressing room surfaces, results on the pitch are affected and if Tottenham don’t have a good start to the season, AVB could find himself losing the support of the entire dressing room and fans very quickly, heaping more pressure on the young manger.

  • Terry yid says:

Was it not dos santos that thee his toys out of the pram and told the press he would be leaving on a free if spurs don’t let him go?
Maybe he should keep it in house!!!

  • BOB says:

Good on AVB someones gotta tell little boyrat hes being disrespectful Harry would have probley prentended hes on Modrics side then insulted Spurs fans then talk rubbish to Talksport and complement everyone except his own team again. Lets give the guy time.

    • Seymour says:

Ha, good riddance Harry, thanks for the good times, we will try to forget the bad (media whore, never had spurs in his heart, tactically flawed, unimaginatice, poor trainer, signing old boys club members erc)…AVB need everyone behind him I make this work…glad there has been little backlash to his arrival

    • George says:

Yeah time is what we need giving that we last won the league fifty odd years ago.

  • Seymour says:

I would suggest that publically criticising a player on strike is perhaps a reasonable response. If fact this builds unity amongst the remainder of the squad who bothered to turn up and prepare for the new season.

AVB can only do this is full knowledge that Modric will never play for spurs again. Such a shame that a great player an professional (until now) we go out on a Berbatov-esque low like this. But Levy likes to squeeze the lost out of deals and it certainly helps make it feel like we’re better off without these players once these sagas are over.

    Maybe AVB is learning…

PS seriously – what spurs fan gives a ah!t about GIo…will never fulfill his potential unless he has some sort of appifany.

  • spur1950 says:

get your facts right mate Redcrapp was bleeting like anything to get rid of MODDERS ,and redcrapp was doing what he always does “look after himself”
and as for modders it was already out about his fine and couple days later asked about modders
SO it seems u have nothing better to do than a pop at the favorite past time of you lot of low lifes seem to do best write crap then more crap and people will believe it!!!

  • Ray says:

Mate, where the f**k are you going with such idiotc suggestions about AVB? The man has been put in charge of managing the team which incase you dont know it, consists of players under his guidance and instruction. In your eyes, the players have a bigger voice than the man put in charge to manage them. Are you suggesting that the players can do what they when they want and say what they want at anytime without being repremanded by the MANAGER because it will hurt their precious feelings if he questions them in any way? Because if that’s the case, Levy and every other chairman might just as well sack all their managers and let the players get on with it themselves. If Dos Santos said what he did, then he is a bigger ass than I give him credit for. Stop jumping on the band wagon and get off AVB’s back you cretin, find another subject to write nonsense about.

  • Kingyspur says:

I completely disagree with your article. I don’t get away with talking about my employer or suggesting I’m off at the next opportunity without the full force of management coming down on me, so why should it be any different for players. Some of the spoilt brats should learn some respect (and discipline in some cases). I love football, but some players are real dicks and your article suggests we should feel sorry for these players? Totally wrong in my opinion.

  • Paul says:

This is crap hows saying hes puzzled and not quite sure what the player’s thought process was when coming out with such a statement slamming a player when the said player has said he wants to leave and or will leave when his contract runs out avb also said he wants to see how dos santos plays in the squad this is always why it messes up people run story’s not run on facts and get the wrong end of the stick.

  • kimchi says:

A ridiculous article. Next up, no doubt: ‘the moon is made of cheese’.

  • Avb lol says:

You will all see next season how bad AVB is, he’s not got a clue when it comes to the prem and done nothing to show he’s improved. Has a massive ego like Mourinho but without the skill to bring it off. If Mod stays (apparently Madrid pulling out) then he’s not gonna play well for the man who criticised him!
Spurs fans always get the hump when people have an opinion that isn’t Spurs are great lol.
It’s a joke and Spurs fans always being so touchy just shows how nervous they are about AVB. If Arsenal appointed him you would all have laughed your arses off

  • Frosin says:

i like how he is sending out a msg that these behaviour is not acceptable and not covering it up like harry did

  • Gary Fox says:

Modric went on strike – just as he did at the start of last season if you remember (a half-hearted game vs Man City and pulling out of the Man Utd game as ‘his head wasnt right’) – but this time, AVB is in charge and has said that his behaviour is unprofessional – which, for someone who earns £75k a week or £5k a year, it is. GDS is another one who needs a short sharp lesson – he is quality and AVB might have given him a chance to show it. But he then runs to the Press and says he wants a free transfer rather than stay and fight for a place. Even the long-forgotten Jenas and Bentley are trying to show the new boss that they have something to offer – has GDS done the same or has he thrown a hissy fit? At Chelsea, AVB was under orders to get rid of the old guard – what he didnt realise was just how much power they held. The situation at Spurs is 100% different and we’ll see this year whether he is a good coach or not. But his handling of Modric and GDS is spot-on so far.
