A new age of austerity seems to be sweeping over Manchester United. Far from being perturbed at being usurped to the Premier League crown by their long-term rivals, Manchester City, Sir Alex Ferguson seems to be responding in the best possible way. That’s by making sensible signings and putting his club in the best possible position for the upcoming season. So the club welcomes Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell to Old Trafford, but most fans will be hoping that there’s more to come.

If United are to silence the noisy neighbours, there’s still a lot of work to be done. So I was pretty heartened to see Click Manchester report that Manchester United have been making enquiries regarding Real Madrid’s Fernando Gago.

He’s regarded in some parts as a ‘Real Madrid reject’, but he’s so much more than that. Besides how many Madrid rejects are their currently knocking about that have gone on to make it big at a new club? It is fair to say that Gago struggled during his time at the Bernabeu.

He made just 92 La Liga appearances for Real Madrid in five years, many of them coming off the bench. That’s an average of 18 appearances per season, for a player with the energy, drive and ability to be starting almost every game.

By the time Sami Khedira arrived and took his place in the squad it was obvious that his Real Madrid dream was over.

So he spent the last season on loan with Roma, where he got plenty of plaudits for his dynamic displays.

I think he’d be an excellent signing for Manchester United. He’s a highly versatile player whose equally adept with the ball at his feet as he is attempting to win it back off of the opposition. He reminds me in some ways of a (fit) Owen Hargreaves. He’s got bags of energy, a mean tackle but isn’t without vision.

And believe it or not, Gago, Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi all played for the same team as children back in Argentina. It’s a small world.

Whilst he’s no Lionel Messi, he’s certainly add something to this Manchester United side and would be a massive step up from the likes of Anderson. Whilst it’s not necessarily a transfer that would get you overly excited, it’s the kind of signing that would make sense from a United perspective.

It’s all the more intriguing given that Gago was once so nearly a Manchester City player. Back in January 2008 he agreed personal terms, but City and Madrid could not negotiate a price.

What’s your take? Should United be gaga for Gago? (sorry!)

A good artical and at the right price he could be an excellent acquisition. However he isn’t the first name on the list & what would you do with Carrick?
