The perfect swap deal for Tottenham?

So, England’s Euro 2012 dream is over. We can all now turn our attention to the stuff that really matters: nonsense transfer rumours and tabloid tattle. Without further ado, let’s dive into it.

The absence of Champions League football, Harry Redknapp and direction has flung Tottenham’s best and brightest back into the rumour-mill. Players like Gareth Bale, Rafael van der Vaart and Luka Modric may well find their name mentioned in conjunction with plenty of clubs this summer. Whether they’ll end up moving or not, however, is an entirely different matter.

Luka Modric in particular has been the subject of intense speculation. According to The Metro, Real Madrid have turned their attentions to the Croatian International after realising that it would not be possible to prise David Silva away from Manchester City.

Tottenham in return have responded by telling Jose Mourinho’s side that they will need to pay at least £25m and part with starlet Nuri Sahin. So would this be a good deal for Tottenham?

The 23-year-old sensation hardly lit up La Liga last season, but continues to get by on the strong reputation he built up during his time playing for Borussia Dortmund. On the few occasions he has had a run out for Real Madrid’s he’s put in good cases for regular game time. But there’s not enough flexibility in Mourinho’s squad to give it to him.

Sahin is a crafty little player, known for his ability to move the ball about, get creative and start attacks. Whilst he’s not as adept as Luka Modric he’s only 23-years-old has bags of potential and could fill in nicely in Tottenham’s midfield.

He’s woefully underused at Real Madrid and may fancy a move to a team like Tottenham who could afford to offer him the game time he deserves. Real Madrid’s midfield is packed and Jose Mourinho may be willing to let Sahin go if it means that he gets Luka Modric in return.

After Modric’s antics last summer it’s not entirely clear that he wants to be a Tottenham player. There’s no point drawing this out and having it turn into yet another Spurs transfer saga. Let Modric go try his luck at Madrid, take on board a genuinely talented youngster and spend the additional £25m sensibly.

If Levy plays his cards right here, you can’t help but feel that Tottenham can end up the victors. Whilst I’d be sad to see Modric leave the Premier League, the time may be right for Spurs to cash in.

What’s your take? Would this swap deal work in Tottenham’s favour?
