Should Tottenham REALLY be expecting a mass exodus?

Gareth Bale has become a £40m target for Spanish giants BarcelonaWhilst most Tottenham fans have come to terms with Harry Redknapp’s dismissal, the consequences will linger on long into next season. The worst and most frustrating outcome being that each and every Paper has used the opportunity to claim that Tottenham’s best players are all likely to quit. The thought here, I suppose, runs something like this:

As if the lack of Champions League football wasn’t enough, now the guv’nors gone? Quite an inexcusable situation and it’s probably time that I cut my losses.

The Star for instance, is convinced that Spurs are going to struggle to keep hold of the likes of Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, Jermaine Defoe and Rafael van der Vaart. It seems that Harry’s exit has opened the floodgates. The end is nigh.

The thing I’m struggling with here: Daniel Levy is an astute business man. He’ll have thought through the consequences of his actions and made sure that they led towards a bountiful future for Tottenham football club. Firing Harry wasn’t an act of revenge. It wasn’t punishment for his England flirtations. It was an attempt to prove that Tottenham were still an ambitious club that wouldn’t put up with coaching staff that took their eye off of the ball.

But he wouldn’t have followed through on it had he believed it would lead to the mass exodus of all of Tottenham’s players. If he felt that firing Harry would have a direct impact in players like Bale and Modric leaving, I just can’t see him following through on it.

Besides, if he makes an ambitious managerial appointment (like for instance Andres Villas-Boas) wont players want to stick around to see what levels of reform can be made?

Yes, Harry did well at Tottenham. He made them competitive once more. But surely the players were dismayed by the way he had his head turned when a better opportunity came up. Levy is looking for a manager who won’t leave when called upon by another club. He’s also looking to install a similar mentality within his players. In that sense, sacking Harry seems to be a good decision.

It strikes me that talks of a mass exodus at White Hart Lane are premature. Whilst some players will be sad to see Harry go, I can’t see it being the excuse given should they opt to leave. The lack of Champions League football is likely to be the main reason any Tottenham player chooses to leave. My hope, however, is that Spurs’ next managerial appointment has the chutzpah to persuade them to stay.

Yes mass exodus of all the dead wood we dont need!!! The top players are all on Long contracts so if they are to go Teams would need to stump up an awful lot of money and that said there would be exceptional funds for addiional players making our squad stronger. Dont Panic lets see what unfolds

Harry leaving will have no direct influence on the future of Gareth Bale – his agent has already said so. If he leaves, it will be to a club he considers better equipped to win trophies on a consistent basis than Spurs. I think he will still be at WHL next season as he seems down-to-earth and seems to understand the need to grow as a player – rather than taking a bucket load of money and sitting on a star-studded bench at such a young stage of his career. There won’t be a mass exodus either – Levy won’t allow it and he showed last year that player power will not be tolerated, especially if players are on long contracts, when he allegedly told Luka he would be prepared to let him play the year out in the reseves.
