Could this be the bargain of the summer for Liverpool?

|

When Swansea City secured the loan signing of Gylfi Sigurdsson from Hoffenheim last January the reaction wasn’t one of total excitement that he may seriously influence their last few weeks of season.  Up until then Sigurosson hadn’t fulfilled his expected potential having had an unsuccessful spell at Reading before being loaned out to Crewe Alexandra and also Shrewsbury Town, surprisingly.  Brendan Rogers however took a chance on the attacking midfielder and reaped mighty benefits.

Sigurdsson finished the season with 7 goals in his 18 appearances together with some crucial assists, statistics to match the likes of Gerrard, Lampard and co.  He looked a star, he had people wondering why Hoffenheim were so happy to let him go and he had people thinking which one of the leagues big clubs would make a move for him.  None of them have as of yet, perhaps that is about to change.

Swansea had appeared to have won the race having had a £6.8 million pounds offer accepted but with Rodgers departure almost immediately after the deal was secure the transfer has been doubted and confirmation has not been forthcoming.  Instead, a move to Rodgers’ new club Liverpool has been heavily speculated.  With the fee wanted by Hoffenheim known through their acceptance of Swansea’s bid it appears only personal terms could prove to hold the deal back.

But is he really good enough for Liverpool? Is it possible for a man to go from loan spells at Crewe and Shrewsbury not that long ago to be playing with Steven Gerrard and Lucas Leiva, it’s a mighty step up.  Rodgers may not be completely convinced that Sigurdsson is worth the £7 million being quoted.  They may be better off spending it elsewhere, a proven goalscorer anyone?

It can’t be denied though that Sigurosson did look like he possessed pure class during his spell at Swansea.  He seemed to create and score at will, from distance and from close range.  The Icelandic man can pick a pass and arguably is a better option to the less mobile clumsy Charlie Adam who desperately struggled last season.

As a fan of English football I hope we see Gylfi Sigurdsson lining up on our shores next year.  He is exciting to watch and adds quality to any side that has him.  Liverpool may just be the perfect fit with a manager who knows him well, backs him and would give him a good go in a side that is set to be revamped this summer.

  • Terry says:

    • Connor Sharod-Southam says:

      He’s only 22, he’ll be a european player by the time he’s 23/4…

    • Bill says:

Good job he’s going to a mid-table team then!

Truth is, he’s far too good for Liverpool. I can’t see him staying there long. Still, £7million is a steal – at least they’ll make a tidy profit.

An usuccessful spell at Reading? Seriously? 20 goals in his last season for us, players and fans player of the season. This site is a load of tosh.

  • IanM says:

Please explain this statement: “having had an unsuccessful spell at Reading”. On what FACTS do you base this statement. Sigurdsson was one of key players for reading in his last season with us. Gylfi was a huge contributor in Reading’s 2009–10 FA Cup run which included wins over Premier League sides Liverpool and Burnley and West Bromwich Albion. Perhaps his biggest goal to came against Liverpool in the third round of the FA Cup on 13 January 2010, when he scored a penalty in injury time to make the score 1–1 and force extra time. Reading went on to win the game 2–1.He scored the winning goal in the 87th minute against Burnley in the fourth round. In the fifth round, he scored the winning goal against West Bromwich Albion for a 3–2 victory in extra time.In April 2010, Gylfi won the Championship Player of the Month Award for March, beating Peter Løvenkrands of Newcastle United, Graham Dorrans of West Brom and Adel Taarabt of QPR, scoring five goals in six games in that month.Gylfi scored against Preston North End in the final game of the season. Before the match, Gylfi was named as the 2009–10 Reading Player of the Season. You aren’t very good at researching or taking any notice of the facts are you…??

  • Connor Sharod-Southam says:

    “Unsuccesful spell at Reading”?

Yeah extremelly ‘unsuccessful’… In the one season he played (most of the games anyway), he scored 21 goals from midfield! He was only 19!

The most ridiculous piece of football journalism I have read in ages!

  • John says:

The Sig actually had a successful spell at Reading, scoring 20 goals….

  • Sam says:

Haha, unsuccessful spell at Reading? He was in our academy before becoming our player of the season and moving on because we needed to cover our losses. He then won player of the season at Hoffenheim as well despite mostly coming off the bench.

  • We need him and one skillful playmaker and speed winger

  • sam says:

Tony i can see what your thinking, the businessmen in me thinks deep down thta there might be something in that.

There are so many players out there and yet we get linked iwth loan players, out of contract players and players loaned out to other parent clubs….. this will not do.

If we had anything about us, EVER BANEGA for 13 mill could be ours, gaston ramirez should alsready be signed, messing about with that deal now and yet city are now sniffing!!!! dear me.

We take years to even get a deal done, time after time we hear mess in the media but yet like unlike chelsea we mess about and it gets leaked and then the price goes up and or another club nipps in!!?

edison cavani should be brought as a statement of intent with the new shirt deal, if they wanted business that deal would capp it all of, it would be a win win situation,, cavani would lift the rooff off!!! shirt deals, sponsorship, new fans in south america, link up with suarez would a deal for lfc, but are we looking at cavani – no way.

so yes i feel let down buy fsg, all these links to failed players that other club dont want like diame who has gone to bloody west ham!!! why did we ever want an ex wigab flopp!

krasic- he is shite and juev dont like him but yet we are in for him! – great going liverpool another 6- 7 flushed down the drain????

another crap summer ahead me thinks

  • lucaswho? says:

Why choose an ageing player like gerrard and an overrated one like lucrap to make your point? Do you really think they are our best players, players that can be used as yardstick to compare others, huh? sigursson has more assists and more goals in half a season than lucrap has in his entire liverpool career…

  • Jeff says:

This article is nonsense! An unsuccessful spell at Reading? He was awesome at Reading, but like many Reading acadamy players, he learnt his trade through a series of loans to lower league clubs.

His performances once he broke into the first team then earned him a £7m move to Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga in September 2010 where, in his first season, he won fans player of the season despite only starting 13 games, although he scored 10 goals.

He sustained an injury that kept him out whilst Hoffenheim changed managers repeatedly (he’s on the fourth since he’s been there!) which has left him out on a limb.

Most Reading fans though rate him the best talent to emerge from our youth set up and probably the second best ever player (after Robin Friday but ahead of Neil Webb or Keith Curle). Time will tell if that’s true.

  • Phil says:

Im sorry? you think gylfi was a failure at reading?? we loved him… we were gutted to see him leave. why would hoffenheim have spent 6 odd million on a player who had been unsuccessful in the championship? gylfi is by far the best player i’ve ever seen play for reading and he will be the perfect replacement for gerrard

  • Gilkesy says:

    What Jeff says…..

If you’re gonna have a blog then at least try and do some research, Francis.

Gylfi was an academy product from Reading. The loan spells (as a teenager) were for his development. His first full season saw him score 20 goals from midfield, in the championship… and an ice cool, last minute penalty at Anfield in the FA Cup 😉

  • JAY says:

During the Sigs break through season at Reading he scored 20 goals, racked in with 10 assists, numerous match winning goals and a FA cup run that saw him score an injury time penalty at anfield & winners at burnley & westbrom VERY UNSUCCESFUL trust me whoever manages to bag this kid They’ve got a gem of a player that would no doubt be a starter in any prem team.

  • Dom says:

It was hardly unsuccessful at Reading, he was brilliant for us. Get your facts right.

  • steve says:

how can you say that Lucas Leiva is crap?have you watched him play?he was one of our best players,if not the best, till he got injured.and if we want to go up the table,we need him starting week in,week out.what is funny is when people claim that Liverpool are sh*t.and then when they beat us at Anfield, they make it sound like they’ve beaten Barcelona!get your facts right, otherwise sh*t up.i hope that Sigurdsson is a good player if he comes, but i think we need better than an unproven at a big club player.either Adam Johnson or Sturridge are more needed than Sigurdsson.

    Reina
    Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique
    A.Johnson Gerrard Lucas Downing
    Suarez Carroll
