Can Arsenal’s new signing’s end the trophy drought?

Unlike last year, Arsene Wenger has done his business early this summer. Usually, the only excitement is a new young player and then a star player leaving. Of course, we’ve had the usual rumours floating around about our talismanic striker Van Persie but this year an optimism has remained. I believe that Van Persie will be here next season and with Podolski and Giroud (Wenger says the deal is 90% done) on their way to support him, our attack will be so much better.

Van Persie, Podolski and Giroud are all capable of scoring goals, many many goals. It reminds me of a time when we had Bergkamp, Henry and Wiltord. 3 players with the ability to finish chances and give the team a huge boost. They can all fit into the side in a variety of ways, whether we switch to 4-4-2 or stick with the 4-3-3 we currently play. Van Persie and Podolski both have experience playing on the wings if they need to. More importantly, they can lift the burden off of Van Persie, a player who for the last few years has been our main striker who we constantly rely on to score.

There’s nothing wrong with a bit of competitiveness, it’s healthy. Last season we were too predictable and there wasn’t many alterations with the line-up each week, excluding the necessary changes due to injury. This poses problems as if it doesn’t work then it can put the club in a dangerous cycle that can be hard to escape from. Podolski and Giroud can help prevent this. New attacking options, each varying slightly from one another.

On top if this there’s also rumours floating around, as they have been for a while, that French international Yann M’Vila is also on his way to the Emirates. This could prove to be a huge addition to the squad. Last year we saw that Alex Song was brilliant in the attacking third, providing many assists and key passes that presented great opportunities for us. Most notably for Van Persie, who benefitted massively from Song’s contribution. However, we also saw that he wasn’t helping us defensively in the way that many of us expected.

This wouldn’t be a problem if M’Vila was added to the squad. He would allow Song to push forward and create chances while not leaving the defense exposed on the back. Our defense is very attacking, even Vermaelen and Koscielny like to push forward when they can. M’Vila will be a huge boost for the entire squad and the fans.

So, in answer to my initial question and the answer is yes, these new additions can help to end Arsenal’s trophy drought. It won’t be solely down to them but they could prove to be the final pieces of the jigsaw. The Premier League title is a big ask and in my opinion its probably a step too far, but with a strong start and some big results early on, who knows? The cup competitions are probably our best bet and I’m extremely optimistic for next season. We’ve said for years a new age is dawning at Arsenal, but this is the first year I truly believe it. We have the young players with huge potential mixed with the more experienced players that can give them guidance and now we have the big name signings. The future is looking bright.
