Are Manchester United right to Hunt down this experienced £17m striker?

It’s still difficult to come to terms with the way the Dutch National side capitulated in Euro 2012. They’re the quintessential example of ‘a team’ of individuals, ‘a team’ without any spirit or camaraderie whatsoever. You look at the Netherlands and you can’t help but feel that they got what they deserve. For all the talent the side possesses they hardly inspire much admiration.

The Dutch players will now have plenty of time to reflect on their failures as well as their futures. Some players, such as Robin Van Persie and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar may seriously be considering a move away from their respective clubs.

At 28-years-old the time is probably right for Huntelaar to start seeking out his last major contract. The Schalke star scored an impressive 29 goals in 32 Bundesliga games leading his side to third place. Despite poor showings at Real Madrid and AC Milan he may well fancy that he’s due another attempt at a so-called ‘big club’. The Daily Mail recently reported that  the Dutchman has a £17m buy-out clause. Schalke’s general manager Horst Heldt told reporters:

“Huntelaar does have a €20 million buyout clause, and the rich club can afford it, but, Klaas Jan has always stressed that he wants to be a champion. This he can be only with Real or Barcelona in Spain.”

That’s the opinion of Heldt, but the Mail also report that United have been ‘put on alert’. Whilst Sir Alex Ferguson has been heavily linked with Borussia Dortmund and Poland striker Robert Lewandowski, this strikes me as a better move.

Manchester United need a striker to compensate for the likes of Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov. Huntelaar fits the bill nicely. Whilst Lewandowski has impressed over the last couple of seasons, it’s difficult to remove the fear that he could just be a flash in the pan. Whilst he was successful in Poland, it’s hard to judge by success in the Polish League.

Huntelaar, on the other hand has enjoyed success in both the Eredivisie and the Bundesliga. He’s been a renowned player for quite some time now and looks to be due another shot at the big time. It strikes me that Lewandowski is not in the same position.

£17m for a man with Huntelaar’s goal-scoring record is a bargain in today’s transfer market. If it comes down to a choice between the Polish International and the Dutchman, I know who I’ll be gunning for.

What’s your take? Who would you like to see join Manchester United this summer?
