Are Liverpool chasing the right transfer targets?

|

I think it’s fair to say that there’s a new air of positivity surrounding Anfield. Following the sacking of King Kenny and the appointment of a promising managerial talent in the form of Brendan Rodgers, there’s every reason to believe that Liverpool can put themselves back on the path towards Premier League success. It’s clear, however that a managerial appointment won’t be enough to fix all the wrongs of last season. The players themselves have to accept a significant portion of the blame and it’s clear that there’ll be some players who are moved on (bye Dirk Kuyt – you will be missed!) and some players who are brought in.

But if Liverpool are to work their way back up to the Premier League they’ll need to make sure that they make the right signings. So what are we to make of the claims that Brendan Rodgers’ top transfer targets are Swansea midfielder’s Joe Allen, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fulham’s Clint Dempsey? Are these the kind of players that can drive Liverpool back to Champions League football?

According to the BBC, Sigurdsson has verbally agreed to make his loan move to Swansea permanent, but since Rodger’s made his Liverpool switch, his future has become somewhat more uncertain. Rodgers has since admitted that “if he comes on the market I have to be interested. He knows that I rate his qualities and abilities.”

Liverpool’s interest in Joe Allen also has an air of authenticity. He was a mainstay at Swansea City and Brendan Rodger’s is clearly a big fan. There’s every chance that he’ll look to bring him over to the Reds.

As for Clint Dempsey, Liverpool’s chairman Tom Werner has made his interest in the American star clear. He told Goal.com, “We never talk publicly about our transfer targets. However, any team would be lucky to have Clint Dempsey playing on their squad.”

These links haven’t just been plucked out of the sky – all of them have an air of verisimilitude. But given that all the players involved belong to mid-table clubs, are they the right kind of players to launch Liverpool back to the top echelons of the Premier League?

I think at this stage it would be churlish to turn our noses up at these kind of players. All three are Internationals, can pass the ball around neatly and score goals. They’ve all got Premier League experience, are physical and have bucket loads of energy. They strike me as dynamic, adaptable players all of whom could make the step up. In particular Clint Dempsey is the real deal and how Liverpool could use his goals moving forward.

In an ideal world the Reds would be linked more heavily to the likes of Eden Hazard and Fernando Llorente, but their lack of Champions League status doesn’t make this realistic. As such they need to make sensible signings and start rebuilding. These three players look like they’ve got the nous to get Liverpool competing again.

What’s your take? Are these the kind of singings Liverpool should be making?

Honestly, I think the players Liverpool are said to be interested in are not good enough. Brendan Rodgers should look at the likes of Adam Johnson, Iker Muniain and Javi Martinez instead. To add to that, they are all young lads with very high work-rates which will help when applying “tiki-taka”.

Are you kidding me, we have to build a base of the team that can pass and move before we add the cherries on top, what an idiot!
Players similar to these and I watched 2 at the swans last season, would be great for starters.

I would be happy with these three players, People can shout about the big names all they want, but in my opinion why? most of these sort of players are so far up themselves with ridiculous wage demands, with dempsey, allen, and sigurdsson and hopefully the return off cole then dispose off spearing and downing we will be a goal scoring machine and the big guns better watch out

      • Steven says:

Don’t forget Aquilani! He too is a very reliable ladder of the ball and more creative than most in the current squad!

      • Eddie says:

I think with the inclusion of Javier Martinez n Luuk De Yong in partner with these 3 players;it’ll help lipool compet 4 champions league season.

  • me says:

Adam Johnson is a MUST buy (10-12mil) and with BR going on record and saying he is going to take a look at the like of Jo Cole and Aqua man i really do think we need to buy any CM’s

A Finisher is also a MUST i would look at someone like Jemain Defo (7m) he is a natural finisher and would work well with Andy Carrol.

With choices like that no wonder we are where we are! This is NOT the way forward.

  • bazza says:

Hey morons Liverpool do their business in quiet and do not disclose their targets. This is just idiots making up stories. The only player BR has indicated that he likes is Gylfi Sigurdsson. So stop listening to people who know nothing about Liverpool and just back the manager 100%

  • bazza says:

Oh yeah there is an agreement in place with swansea about not signing players for 12 months.

    • Chancer says:

Correct but Swansea will sell at the right price or if they believe a player’s head has been turned, like any other club 🙂

I’m interested to see what BR can do with what we already have, especially the young players coming through and players returning from loan.

With the £30m or whatever saved put towards 5,000 more seats at the Anfield Road End!

    • craig says:

If allen ends up on the market the 12month restriction the becomes ineffective

  • I think they are right on their transfer targets and not at the same time because both sides have positive and negative outcomes to them. Thanks for opening our minds to this topic.
