A transfer made in heaven for Liverpool?

Brendan Rogers Liverpool revolution is still in its earliest hours as he continues to settle into his new job.  However, once Rogers feels comfortably there is sure to be a flurry of departures and arrivals in the players lounge.  Players contrasting from Rogers renowned style of play are set to be ditched and players matching the high tempo passing game are set to bought or retained.  Liverpool do have a large set of players already in tune with Rodgers desired football but they possess a group of players who will always be stuck in a different period unable to transform themselves, players such as Charlie Adam and Jay Spearing spring to mind.

So where might Rodgers be looking to rebuild his new squad?  Eastlands? One players who has been linked with Liverpool in the past is Adam Johnson, a man yet to firmly establish himself at City despite signing 2 years ago for 7 million pounds.  The winger has impressed when given the chance but has often been overlooked by Mancini who has numerous options at his disposal.  Johnson is only 24 and obviously British meaning the Liverpool owners would be more than happy to sanction a move for the winger.

Johnson matches the Rodgers ethos and is arguably a bigger threat than Stewart Downing after he endured a highly disappointing campaign which saw Johnson finish with better statistics despite his shortage of opportunity to impress.  He thrives in passing and moving, taking his man on successfully and scoring from range.  Johnson has the capability to become a world star but requires backing and confidence, something Mancini has deprived him off.

City are showing no sign on relenting there lavish spending and it seems than Johnson could soon find himself even further down the pecking order.  If he isn’t careful Johnson could soon become a forgotten man of football, much like Joe Cole, a man with noticeable talent but never able to truly show it.  It would be a shame to see Johnson end up like that which is why a move would be in the best of his interests.  Rodgers would back him to hill giving him the self belief and confidence he so desperately needs to resurrect both his domestic and International career.

Liverpool are set to embark on a carefully planned programme of acquiring safe, proven players able to match Rodgers style of play.  With funds burned last season they know they cannot afford the same this summer, Johnson could well be a vital relatively cheap cog in Rodgers new and exciting Liverpool machine.

Agree that Johnson is better and more suited to Liverpool than the likes of Babel and Riera.

But.. “Stupid asian fans”?!?! that’s really poor.

  • jonesy says:

A Johnson, Afellay, L de Jong, C Eriksen, Diame and Seedorf ( to play a Gary McAllister role) would be great summer signings

    • chesterley says:

Not going to happen. who in their right mind is going to pay £17M+ for a bench warmer who cost only £7M two years ago? City , as the saying goes , can see Liverpool coming! Leave him on the bench he is not that good – yet another Englishman over-hyped by the press boys.

  • kd7 says:

I’d love it if we could sign him but would be surpised if city will sell.

  • ode says:

nic player plese bring him on

  • MG01 says:

Good points apart from Downing being a left-winger and Johnson being right sided.

  • Dennis says:

The owners need to give B Rodgers £60M to spend on 7 players this summer:

1: B Matuidi Of PSG should be brought for £6-£12M DM to compete with Lucas for Defensive Midfielder role in 1st team DM

2: A Cissokho Of Lyon should be brought for £4-£9M to compete with Enrique for the Left Back position. LB

3: J Hoillet Of Blackburn should be brought on free transfer or up to £4M to be clubs first out and out right winger at club. RW

4: G Sigurdsson Of Hoffenheim should be brought to club for £7M to be clubs attacking creative midfielder. AM

5: C Nzogbia Of A Villa Or A Johnson Of Man City, One of these should be brought for £6-£14M to compete with Downing for the Left wing Position at club. LW

6: M Phillips Of Blackpool should be swapped with C Adams, C Adams should be shipped back to Blackpool in Exchange for M Phillips to compete with J Hoillet for Right wing Position at club. RW

7: G Agbonglahor Of A Villa should be brought for £5-£12M to compete with Bellamy, Carroll and Suarez for a forward position or for the loan striker role/position. FD

    • Terry says:

Are you for real, I wouldnt want any of these mid table players at best

      • Dennis says:

Are you serious? we finished 8th last season and our £83M foursome of Adams, Carroll, Henderson and Downing, scored less than 15 goals amongst them all. For £83M worth of talent you expect creativity and goals, both we lacked as the league table showed at end of season.

The 7 players mentioned would improve the squad dramatically, B Matuidi would leave PSG because he struggles to get ahead of Thiago Motta, Momo Sissoko week in week out. And if he was competing with one person for his position, i think he would take the chance.

Johnson and Kelly are both right backs, good right backs but both injury prone and always out some time during season.
Johnson played at left back as in an honesty, flanagan,Robinson should be nowhere near the first team. A Cissokho would offer Enrique good competition for his place week in week out.

We have not had a genuine pacey quick consistant right winger since Mcmanaman Era, Pennant was the closest club had to ever have good right winger. Hoillet would be a quality class, addition to the side, pace, skill, youth, trickery, goals, knows the premiership inside out and would do well on the right wing for our club.

G Sigurdsson was a class player for swansea last year and has more, skill, mobility in him than C Adams so i am sure he will be a hit if he is brought to club.

C Nzogbia was not utilised well at all, he is a left winger or a right winger not a centre midfielder, yet he played in centre midfield on several occassions last season and if he is put on the left wing and given the ball regularly to get at full back there is not one full back in the league who doesn’t get taken on for fun when Nzogbia is at full flow.

M Phillips is young, bright, pacey, quick, skillful winger who would be a good back up player to hoillet and also offer good competition for his place.

G Agbonglahor offers club pace, speed, power and some goals and a few assits. He would be a very good signing upfront, as bellamy is only forward at club who can get in behind teams.

    • Daz says:

Are you on another planet? Terrible suggestions.

      • Dennis says:

        What other planet?

Your going on like we finished 3rd last season,we have now become mediocre team end of story.

No champions league team loses to clubs like: West Brom, Wigan,Swansea, Qpr, Fulham, Stoke, Sunderland and Newcastle.

The other 4 clubs we lost to: The two Manchester Clubs, Arsenal and Tottenham to a certain extent are acceptable as they are on same level as us. But to lose to the teams mentioned above these 4 was shocking, pathetic, abizmal to say the least and we regularly lost to those weak, poor teams so we could not say it was unlucky or a coincidence at all.

And those 7 players mentioned would all be relatively cheap but players with class, quality, mobility, pace, speed, creativity that club have lacked in side for 3 to 4 seasons now.

  • chinonso says:

Pls sign him, or afeley, remirez, or even bodibuoz

  • Andrew says:

Dennis I have a few points re your ‘potential signings’
    1. Why swap PSG for Liverpol? They have CL football we don’t, so not likely
    2. I’m sure Brendan will not spend big on another left back, we have Enrique, Johnson, Robimson, Flannigan amd even Wilson who can play there. There are other areas of the squad that need the money spent before left back so highely unlikely.
3.He’s going to Germany, very unlikely to happen
    4. Strong chance of it happening but the guy will have to play 2nd fiddle to Gerrard as a creatve force, if he can then he’ll be good value, if not then he’ll be a poor signing.
    5. Nzogbia are you kidding? He was awful for Villa avoid at all costs. Adam Johnson might happen but I’m hardly salivating at the thought of him.
6.Where do I start? Phillips is hardly fantastic. who the hell is Charlie Adams? It’s Charlie Adam and why would he just accept going back to Blackpool? Not a hope in hell of it happening.
7.Are you being serious? Villa under new management will flog their one half decent englishman to us? Think it through it ain’t going to happen for many reasons but the obvious one is, Do you seriously think that Lambert will annoy Villa fans by flogging one of their own to us? He’s not stupid so to sum your wishlist up you mention a possible 8 players coming in. Of those 8 I can only see 2 arriving if 2 and Adam will not be dropping down a league to go to Blackpool so congrats you’re about as accurate as Downing’s crossing.

    • Dennis says:

      Andrew, are you serious?

Matuidi would swap PSG for us if we went for him as he has two holding midfielders both in front of him: T Motta and Momo Sissoko. If he came to club he would have one player competing for his position, LUCAS. Spearing is mediocre and championship material and class and it showed over season.

Flannigan and Robinson should be nowhere near the first team, simply not good enough or johnson wouldnt have been played out of position. A Cissokho has been linked with us for 3 to 4 seasons now and would be good competition for Enrique at Left back.

Hoillet has still not signed for no one and if the owners and scouts to their fingers out of their a–es then we would have been able to sign him along time ago.

we are competing with Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Newcastle for the 3rd and 4th position in league each year.

Arsenal have: Walcott,Oxlaide-Chamberlain, Gervinho , Arsharvin as their wide men.

Chelsea now have: Sturridge, K De Bruyne, Marin and Hazard as their wingers.

Newcastle Have: B Arfa and J Gutierrez as their wide men.

Tottenham have: Bale, Bentley, Dos Santos, Lennon and Rose.

we have no goals, no assists Downing as our only genuine winger at club. And we wonder why we finished 8th last season, Bellamy is a forward or 2nd striker. Maxi is an AM and both players were on bench 80% of season even though they were our biggest threats last season with suarez.

Nzogbia is a quality winger and even if he had a poor season as he was played in centre midfield for a lot games last season which is not his position i am 100% sure he had more goals and assists than downing last year. And would offer more pace, speed, creativity, class and cutting edge than Downing at our club.

G Agbonglahor is a good player and M O’neill is now trying to take him to Sunderland, if B Rodgers also went for him our club could get him for £6-£12M and he would suit B Rodgers counter attacking football, his pace, power and speed would be an asset to any side playing counter attacking football.

  • Martin Badger says:

Just another Downing. Very unlikely to want to join Liverpool anyway. In short, a waste of time.

  • Urnar says:

If the Johnson deal materialises, it is more like a transfer sealed in HELL!

  • Fabio says:

Much more creative than Downing, he can actually beat his marker on a dribble (unlike downing who always cuts wide and crosses). Still a mystery why we didn’t sign him at 7mil from Middlesboro. Has my blessing. Not for 17mil, though. 10-12 mil tops! I would love to see some Latin American talent brought in too. Paulinho from Corinthinas would be a great buy on the Lucas mold.

  • Tonyenyie says:

I No d new man wil b gread

  • LFCIsrael says:

With no doubts on my mind, hes gonna be a good player.if u ask me,hes just waisting his precious time in Man-city.hes young and skillful,in short we want him.

  • Noblelox says:

It will need Johnston to put in a transfer request, as I’d be nervous paying much more than what they bought him for. Anywhere north of double figure would worry me dearly. But apart from that, I would like him in the squad. England need to realise that to be as successful as Spain, you need the players to be familiar with each other as they are in Spain, so one or two of the big clubs, so have to make an effort to bring on home grown talent. Just to think it England do win anything in the future, it maybe down to FSG.

  • SuaRed says:

Johnson is talented but very individual. Great player but our new system may not suit.
