Charles Green’s biggest battle: Recovering Ranger’s reputation

|

Now that Charles Green and his consortium have been named as favourites in the fight to own Rangers, we may find that the purchasing of the club has actually been the easier part of the deal. Selling the new Rangers may prove a harder prospect. Now that Green appears to have Rangers in his grasp, what does he do with them? Green will have to sell Rangers in its new form, not just to the SPL but to the Rangers support. He has to come up with a plan that will excite the support and appease those that would prefer there to be no Rangers. This may be Charles Green’s hardest battle. Rangers are now seen as such a toxic brand that it will take the skills of someone able to sell snow to the Eskimos to close this deal.

‘Damned if you do, damned if you don’t’ seems to be the position in which the SPL finds itself. Punish Rangers by kicking them out of the SPL and enter a future of lost revenue, or face the wrath of Rangers’ rivals who are already threatening boycotts of grounds that don’t vote against Rangers. There does not seem to be much room to manoeuvre.

If Rangers under Charles Green stays in the SPL, will the punishments and sanctions be viewed as a challenge or an obstacle to Rangers’ future by the support?

For me the solution to the problem is an easy one. Rangers should see this as a chance to rediscover themselves. Rediscover the spirit of the Gallant Pioneers. Saving Rangers history is important, but making sure that Rangers have a future is equally important and that is the battle that the fans must fight. There is no future in the SPL for Rangers. It is already over. Rangers should resign from the SPL and start again in the third division or elsewhere. Rangers in administration can never be treated in just a logical way; there is an emotional factor in football. For Rangers it is not all about the money. Rangers need a healing process, time away from the clubs who bared their teeth, and kicked them when they were down.

Take the decision out of the hands of others and take control of our own destiny; the chance to write a new chapter in the history of Rangers. Yes, we will lose the big name players, but players always come and go. It is the support that matters. There will also be job losses behind the scenes, but Rangers being in administration was always going to have a long term effect on income. The one resource that Rangers have is the Rangers youth academy in Milngavie, and they must use this wisely.

Let’s not wait to be punished. There will be times when the SPL will be missed, but if Rangers do decide to quit then the fans must be ready to follow. For as long as Rangers stay in the SPL they will be the target for those hypocrites and snipers who hate Rangers more than they love their own clubs. And as for the clubs that state that they have a survival strategy if Rangers go under; this would be their chance to prove it and flourish.
