Here’s a quote from Sir Alex Ferguson regarding a potential Manchester United target: “I looked around and there was only one player I would have brought here. But that move was sealed off quite early by the club he went to.” Before you get confused, the quotes from 2010. The man he’s referring to is David Villa. Things have obviously changed since then.
Yes he’s a Barcelona player now, but his future isn’t entirely certain. Spanish football correspondent Guillem Balague has told Sky Sports that he things Barca will look to sever ties with the forward when the transfer window re-opens. He said: “They are going to try to sell Dani Alves and David Villa. I don’t know if they will sell them, but that’s what they are trying to do. If that’s the case, that will raise some money to get the players they need.”
He then took to his Sky Sports column to talk more about Villa. Asked if there was ‘an opportunity for United to get Villa’ he responded: “Premier League teams have never had a better chance of buying David Villa. Before he just wasn’t up for it – he didn’t know the language, his family was young – but now you can convince him. He will start training with the team in April and there’s an opportunity for a Premier League team to take him.”
All these quotes combine to raise the question: would Villa be a good signing for Manchester United?
He broke his leg on the 15th of December and is still in convalescence. There’s no guarantee he’ll come back as strong as he was in the past. Yet his goal-scoring record speaks for itself. 23 goals in 49 Barca appearances. 108 goals in 166 Valencia appearances. 51 goals in 82 Spain appearances. Basically: he gets goals wherever he goes.
Basically, he’s a quality player that could improve the squad. Sir Alex has shown his interest in the past. It looks like he may be available at the summer for the right price. So should Manchester United make a bid?
Yes the forward positions aren’t really United’s main concern (the focus should probably be on the midfield) he’s the kind of signing that could really get fans excited. In the struggle to keep up with Manchester City (who seem to be stockpiling a collection of top strikers) Villa could make for a perfect retort.

David Villa is certainly a player who would suit the Premier League. And I would LOVE to see him at United. Having Javier not playing for Mexico this summer, he has time to prepare for next season. So, Javier and Villa up front, with Rooney dropping to midfield. Sounds pretty amazing doesn’t it? With Valencia and Young on the form they were last season, our attack could be bolstered by the capture of David Villa.
