Time for Tottenham to give up hope in this precocious talent?

It’s hard to believe that Tottenham’s David Bentley is now 27-years-old. There’s a whole section of his career from about 2010 ‘til the present moment that just seems to have gone missing. Yes he’s had loan moves to Birmingham City and West Ham United but for one reason or another he hasn’t made good use of them. He should really be entering his peak, instead, serious questions are being raised as to if he’ll ever play for a big club again.

Which brings me to ClubCall’s claim that QPR are weighing up a move for Bentley. The belief is that Mark Hughes will wait to see whether the R’s have stayed up before contacting any other players he has targeted to improve the squad. If they remain in the Premier League it’s believed that Hughes will be granted a massive budget to try and get QPR competitive once again. So is the time right for Tottenham to sell Bentley?

Bentley has plenty of good assets. He can cross the ball well, he’s a set-piece specialist and has pretty good technique and composure when on the ball. He’s also capable of smashing home a few long range efforts. When he’s on song he looks like the real deal. The only trouble is that he rarely looks up for it.

Back in July 2008 Spurs spent £15m on David Bentley (Blackburn Rovers must have been unable to believe their luck). There’s little doubt that the North London side will make a massive loss should they decide to sell him this summer. Yes he started fairly well at White Hart Lane but he quickly petered out and soon stopped featuring altogether.

Tottenham have plenty of threat down the wings, so he’s been loaned out to Birmingham – who weren’t all that impressed by him. He made another attempt at a loan move this season for West Ham, but was forced to return after he picked up a knee injury and had to undergo surgery to treat it. As such, it’s been a while since we’ve really seen him in action.

I doubt that he’ll feature for Spurs any time soon. Harry Redknapp’s overseeing a pretty crowded and competitive midfield and it doesn’t really look as though there’s any room for the former Arsenal Academy star.

His only hope involves taking a step down, joining a club that can offer him regular football and then start to rebuild his career. If QPR can offer this then he should jump at the opportunity.

What’s your take? Is it time for David Bentley to move on?

when the great Harry goes i hope he takes big head Bentley with him. That will make two less dollops of crap at the lane.

Stating the obvious a little bit. Sure, Bentley has struggled to make it into the first team, and he’s been injured, but to single him out is a bit strange. Are you forgetting the likes of Jenas, Gomes, Bassong, Pienaar, Dos Santos, Corluka? Maybe even Huddlestone? A lot of players in the Spurs squad that simply won’t get any game time short of a cataclysmic injury crisis and therefore a lot of deadwood needed clearing to make room for Remy, Vertonghen, Adebayor, Damiao etc.

A very talented player, who may be better suited in the French or Spanish leagues, where it is more about technique and less about strength and speed. His goal against Arsenal was one of the best of all time.

  • Woodsy says:

His lack of pace is the main stumbling block, which is a shame because compared to the likes of Gio and JJ I think he can offer more to the team. He needs games and confidence though and Harry doesn’t rotate enough to give that. At Blackburn he was performing at a very high level and hopefully he can find somewhere to start again and get back to that form. Oh and Dude, if THudd can get fit we won’t be so reliant on Modric pulling the strings in midfield. It’s easy to forget the role that THudd and Bentley played in us making 4th all those years ago.

‘All those years ago’-T’was the season before last

I totally agreed. He played when we ended up 4th, with a weaker squad than at present. Of course Lennon is better. But when Lennon is injured, Modric or VDV on the right is totally wasted. Even Bale on the right is wasted. Bentley should be given a chance. He has never been appreciated by HR. But neither has Bent (remember Sandra), Dos Santos, Pinear, Kevin Prince, Taraabt, and many more. HR has lost us many a good player.

the problem with bentley is delusions of grandeur.he firmly believes hes the cats whiskers.let someone tell him the whiskers are going gray.maybe at the o’s he may save his career.my friend sid tells me at arsenal he wanted to play instead of berkamp.that says it all.

  • Essexian76 says:

Treated badly by Redknapp, his form during another of Lennon’s long term absences was one of the reasons we qualified for the CL.He did everything asked of him, only to be benched after drenching Harry after the win at Man City.
He probably thought there and then he had no future with us while Harry’s in charge, but instead of getting down to hard graft he chose to sulk at Birmingham and subsequently West Ham before his injury=good player, but great! nah!

  • Harry's Boy says:

I read only yesterday that Defoe gave a Bentley to Alexandra Burke. I thought it was him!!

  • ParklaneDog says:

My abidinbg memory of Bentley is throwing the barrel of water over HR when we qualifed for Champs league. Unfortunate really, wasted talent.

  • P says:

Lets clear out some of the squad to pay for ayers that will improve it. Defoe, Jenas, Gomez all need to go. That should pay the wages for Remy or someone of that quality when you add it to the money we got for Pav. Saha & Nelson were free transfers. Can you remember how happy you were when we got rid of Crouchy!!
