As the old saying goes: class is permanent, form is temporary. Chelsea striker Fernando Torres is certainly living by the statement after a terrific week for the £50million striker. His last gasp goal against Barcelona helped Chelsea produce a stunning victory to send them to the Champions League final and then on Sunday a brilliant hat-trick from the Spaniard continued Chelsea’s rich vein of form.

It is well and truly the business end of the season and this is where clubs need their big players to perform, and going on the past weeks evidence, Torres has turned up in some style. The striker may hold the key to how Chelsea’s season ends, either with silverware, or face missing out on gaining a Champions League spot for next season.

Since arriving from Liverpool 18 months ago, Torres has endured a torrid time, one that he would want to banish from his memory. The £50million price tag which loomed over his head whenever he played as well as a long goal drought hampered his confidence hugely in his first season at the Stamford Bridge club. It took him 903minutes to score his first goal for Chelsea against West Ham, his only goal of his debut season at Chelsea.

The 2011/2012 bought new hope for Torres, who looked more like the striker he once was. A goal against Manchester United on September the 18th looked to set the striker in his way, only for him to produce one of the misses of the season. And when your lucks down, your luck is down as he found out against Swansea, again scoring but then getting sent off for a two-footed tackle which led to a three game suspension.

Two goals against Genk in the Champions League in October would be lead him on a 24 game goalless streak from October to Match. During that time then Chelsea manager, Andre Villas-Boas showed little faith in the Spaniard; however since his departure in March, Torres looks to have rediscovered the form that made him one of the most deadly finishers in world football.
Since Roberto di Matteo took temporary charge of Chelsea, Torres has scored seven goals. His hat-trick against Queens Park Rangers oozed class and skill and further performances like that this season could bring the London club the F.A Cup and that prized possession of the Champions League after a very average season.

Torres’ form is timely as Chelsea will look to reshape their aging squad in the summer, and with Didier Drogba’s future is still unknown, Chelsea should look to shape their squad around Torres. So come the end of the season, Fernando Torres may end up having one of his most successful, after looking like it could be one of his worst.
