Can Manchester United really tempt away this Arsenal star?

So how about this talkSPORT ‘exclusive’? Apparently Manchester United are lining up a ‘sensational’ move for Arsenal captain Robin Van Persie. Speculation is rife over the future of the Dutchman who only has one more year left to run on his Arsenal contract. Do the Gunners sell him this summer or risk losing him next summer on a free transfer? Either way -they’re likely to need to fend off plenty of interest in the summer. Will Manchester United really be one of the clubs competing for the 28-year-old’s signature?

Arsenal fans have had to put up with all manner of rumours concerning their talismanic striker. There have been reports that Manchester City are ready and willing to pay RVP £250k a week should he be tempted to move to Eastlands. Then there’s Juventus and Real Madrid who have also been linked to the Arsenal captain.

As ever, it’s best to treat these kind of rumours with a pinch of salt. It’s worth considering – do Manchester United really need a player like Robin Van Persie?

There’s a good chance they’ll get ready of the lanky Bulgarian ace Dimitar Berbatov, but do they really need to spend £25m+ on a new striker? They’ll be left with the mighty Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck, Javier Hernandez (who will be getting a well deserved rest this summer and won’t be featuring in the Olympics) and Michael Owen who could probably use a little more game time. Then there’s Will Keane who has impressed for the Reserves this season and arguably deserves a call up to the first team.

So if they are in the market for a striker, there’s no real need to drop a ton of cash on a big name. Surely Sir Alex Ferguson has more important priorities?

With Paul Scholes’ future uncertain and Manchester United’s midfield in desperate need of a little creative inspiration, this should be the area where Fergie looks to apply the boost. Quality creative players – your Wesley Sneijders, Luka Modrics and the likes – won’t come cheap.

With Manchester City in the ascendance it’s up to United to spend sensibly and make sure they keep pace. RVP is without doubt a quality player, but he’s not the player that United need. So is it time to focus on the midfield?

What’s your take? Would you take RVP at United? Do they have other priorities?

Do you seriously make articles on every little rumour. Talksport and Daily Mail are two sources where you’re likely to hear ludicrous stories and ones not even worth reading about. Last season they both said Sneijder and Modric were dead certs to be at Old Trafford etc etc
Of course I’d LOVE RVP at United, but he wouldn’t move and we really do not have any interest in him. Like you said, our money needs to go on a left back and a few centre mids
