TWO Signings that COULD breathe fresh life into an ailing Liverpool side:

A one-all draw against a pretty woeful Aston Villa side must surely be considered the straw that broke the camel’s back. No matter what happens from this point onwards until the end of the season, it’s clear that this pack of players, under this leadership has no chance of competing for Champions League football next season, let alone the Premier League title.

Decent cup runs aside fans will be desperate for their side to prove that they’re still a force in the League by maintaining a serious title challenge. For this to happen, however, it’s going to take a serious switch-up.

According to CaughtOffside Liverpool are considering moves for Manchester City duo Adam Johnson and Emmanuel Adebayor. Whilst there are no quotes or evidence provided to back up these claims, I can’t help but feel that these are the kind of players that the Reds should be chasing.

It’s frustrating seeing Kenny Dalglish and Damien Comolli taking a moneyball approach to the transfer window. It’s all well and good snapping up talent from lower down the League and hoping that they could do the job in the higher echelon’s of world football, but there’s certainly something to be said for buying talent that has already proven itself at the top level’s of the game.

Liverpool desperately need a goal-scoring centre-forward and Adebayor has scored goals wherever he has gone. He’s scored 13 goals in 27 League appearances this season (contrast that to Liverpool’s miserly 37 goals in 32 games – stats correct at time of writing) and you’ll see what he alone could add. He’s also effective in his build-up play grabbing 11 assists this season and could be just the man needed to get Andy Carroll firing.

Tottenham may not have the cash to sign him on a permanent deal at the end of the season so Liverpool may be tempted to give him a route out of the Etihad. Of course, price will be a major concern for the Reds, but you can’t help but feel that they could do a lot worse.

Adam Johnson may not have had as much of a chance to prove himself at City but he’s the kind of player who you wish would be granted a run of games at his club and a chance to prove his worth. At 24-years-old he’s only made 10 Premier League starts this season and is no doubt itching for a chance to earn regular football. If Liverpool offer Man City a fair deal I’m sure that Roberto Mancini could be persuaded to sell.

Selling players like Dirk Kuyt, Maxi Rodriguez, Fabio Aurelio and allowing Joe Cole and Alberto Aquilani to make their loan moves permanent will free up funds for Liverpool to make moves like these. Surely it’s time to start rolling the dice on players with some pedigree?

I remember Adebayor playing for Real Madrid last season and I have to say he was woefully out of his depth. Of course, the standard is far higher
    – he did absolutely nothing in the matches he played against Barcelona, for example – but somehow I do not think he would accomplish a great deal at Anfield. Neither have I been greatly impressed by Adam Johnson. My guess would be they would just be two more disappointing signings ( not that I expect the deals to happen )

  • ds says:

honestly, i think adebayor is not the striker we need.
Adam johnson is a wonderful player that I would love to see on my team, but as long as he challenges for titles I don’t know if he would like to move to our club.

  • royce says:

I would take Johnson if the price were right but not Adebayor i think he is the wrong player.
Someone like Soldado even young strikers such as Dejong and Van wolfswinkle represent better value long term.

  • Nige says:

Adam Johnson would be a great signing. He is a wasted talent on the bench at city. i hope our scouts can find a gem of a striker like the newcastle scouts, who got BA and Cisse! Sign the newscastle scouting team!!

I’m sure Villa fans are thinking exactly the same thing about drawing against a pisspoor Liverpool. McLeish’s days are numbered.
