Even the most loyal and slightly deluded Liverpool fans amongst you will now realise that Liverpool have a problem, a problem that has seen them slip to 6 defeats in 7 matches during a spell of what can only be described as relegation form. At the beginning of the run pundits and fans alike were describing it as just a minor blip – perhaps a League cup hangover – but with no upturn in results appearing on the horizon it’s left to Kenny Dalglish to seriously consider his options this summer.
Of course during a run like this the manager’s position is talked about and put under much scrutiny but Dalglish deserves at least another summer to shape his squad and create an identity for his team. There is no better man to transform Liverpool back to the force they once were when he managed to win 3 league titles with his beloved club. No one else knows the club better than Dalglish; he knows what makes the club tick and therefore must be fully entrusted with rebuilding his side. However, with the combination of last summer’s failed attempts to rejuvenate the team and the quiet ageing of players in some quarters, this summer could be a very busy one.
So who are the players most vulnerable to pay for their sides failings this season? Firstly, a fairly obvious one in Andy Carroll; much has been said of the big man and little more needs to be said other than the summer represents Liverpool’s opportunity to wash there hands of a man who has been an unprecedented failure upon Merseyside. The club should acknowledge they made a mistake on the striker and try to recoup as much as they can come the summer. It also seems likely that the club will be separating from the likes of Dirk Kuyt and Maxi Rodriguez as there age catches up on them whilst this year could also be Jamie Carragher’s last as a player as he moves into a coaching role within the club.
There should also be question marks over the heads of the other new signings as the young British talent brought in has failed so far to warrant a constant position in the team. They deserve more time though as there’s every chance Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing could gel into an exciting attacking trio. Liverpool have a lot of talent in their youth departments who should be starting to push for a first team position so it is time these expensive mistakes begin rectifying a season of disappointment.
It’s a crucial summer for Dalglish and Liverpool and one that the club and their legendary Scotsman cannot afford to get wrong again. Dalglish must invest wisely this time rather than being blinded by the player’s nationality and age. These are important factors but they shouldn’t overpower class and experience. It’s now or never for Dalglish and one hope’s it’s now as Liverpool should never be associated with eighth position.

Their second important decision is to promote Kenny Dalglish as Football Director with specific duties of introducing the Liverpool way to the current and new players as well as to the new manager (his job description should not be including transfer policy duties).
Their third important decision is to appoint a world class manager with the following 3 main characteristics:
1. To have a proven winning record (including main titles)
2. A real winner manager
3. With a deep knowledge and understanding of modernized football
I agreed with you, Costasy about looking for a manager with a deep knowledge and understanding of modernized football. I don’t underestimate Kenny’s capability but I do acknowledge that he has been away from active football coaching/managing for quite some time, may be he had lost touch.
i don’t think Dalglish was blinded by nationality when he signed Enrique or Coates, or by age when he signed Bellamy. Oh, and you forgot Aurelio!
