Have Arsenal already wrapped up the SECOND signing of their summer?

Whilst beating Manchester City to effectively hand Manchester United the League is all well and good I’m sure that Arsenal have higher aspirations. The aim over the course of next season will be to amass some silverware and if that’s to happen the Gunners are likely to require a couple of reinforcements. Yes they’ve been good over the last couple of months (defeat to a faltering QPR aside) but it’s clear that there are still some major weaknesses within this squad.

It’s also becoming clear that Arsene Wenger has learned from the mistakes of the past. Last summer has to be one of the lowest points of his career. He lost one of the best players he’s ever had at the club in Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona and then the silky and skilful Samir Nasri slinked off to rivals Manchester City.

The trouble was that these signings went through extremely late in the transfer window and Wenger didn’t have any replacements lined up. Instead he and the club were forced into a transfer trolley-dash approach and although they picked up a few gems (Mikel Arteta, Per Mertesacker and the Ox) it’s fair to say that things could have been handled better.

So it’s important that Arsene gets any potential signings completed at the earliest possible convenience. This will give them a full pre-season to adapt to this Arsenal side and will probably prove financially prudent as well (since good performances in Euro 2012 may drive up price-tags).

We’ve already heard a lot about FC Koln’s Lukas Podolski who appears to be a done-deal. Podolski has provided his struggling home-town club with plenty of goals this season, despite being embroiled in a relegation battle and the hope is that he brings his goal-scoring form with him when he joins the Gunners.

But it’s looks as though Wenger’s also aiming to shore up his defence this summer. Jan Vertonghen has been linked regularly to the Gunner’s over the last couple of months and has admitted that he’d love to join up with Belgium International team mate Thomas Vermaelen at the Emirates. What’s more his Ajax boss Frank de Boer seems resigned to losing him at the end of the season: Speaking to The Football Fever Podcast  he said:

“Yes we’ve already discussed it. When there’s a club that he’s already interested in – and it’s really got to be a good club – then he will leave. It’s 100 per cent sure. I think he’s ready to make a next step. For us, it’s a setback, of course, to miss that kind of quality player.”

Arsenal is thought to be his favoured destination and with the Gunners thought to have been interested for a while now, it’s possible that he’ll be plying his trade at the Emirates next season.

With over 200 appearances for Ajax, strength, power, passion and versatility, he’d make for a great Arsenal signing. Let’s just hope that the Gunners continue this forward thinking outlook.

  • Dr Momoh Abdul-Razaq McSionel says:

Jan Vertonghen is a quality player no doubt,he’s sure to bring additional quality to Arsenal’s game. However,I have two doubts about him,the first being Mr Wenger’s silence on his transfer, the other being his method of play.I believe he is rather rough in his tackles and 2013 being a year a trophy must land at the Emirate stadium,we need to be sure that when we field 11 players at the start,we have 11 players at the end of 90 minutes. Can Mr Vertonghen guarantee this if and whenever he is fielded?

  • CiTyBlUe says:

Jan Vertonghen is also a target for Manchester City who have been sending their scouts out for the past 17 months, fellow countryman to Belgium Captain Vincent Kompany.

With Eden Hazard on his way to Manchester City, you can bank on it Jan will be too.

    • WAHOOLIGAN10 says:

TROLLING SITES CAUSE YOU CAN STAND YOUR THE REALITY OF LOSING WHAT WAS ALMOST GIVEN TO YOU! JAN HAS NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT KOMPANY! LETS SEE HOW MUCH YOU SPEND TO ATTEMPT (ATTEMPT) TO BUY INTO CLASS. YOU MUST BE SMELLING THE MANURE FROM YOUR SIDE OF THE CITEH, EH?

      • CiTyBlUe says:

Ye just like you old self proclaimed classy ones whith zero class like to think, there is no chance of you gaining 2nd place because We and scummy United won’t allow a second rate self righeous bunch of tools in.

You’re mediocrity now, just a collective bunch of pompus and self righeous has beens with about as much class as a gypsy.

    • lordgunner says:

well vermalaen is best mate with verthongen so who care you have kompany

      • CiTyBlUe says:

Moron, their national team mates but not even close to mates, its a damn fact that he looks up to Kompany and a damn fact our club have shown real interest in him by sending scouts out on more than one occasion to watch him.

Why would anyone want to go to a pompus club like Arsenal?, only those that have no chance of playing for the big boys now.

You have no more players worth anything to anyone above you, Van Pussy is a cripple with far to many injurys to even worth wasting money on and the rest are just over hyped youngsters, Tottenham Hotspur have a better squad than you lot.

  • deejay says:

    2 + 2 = 5 just because A R didnt pass to RVP in the 90th minute ?

  • deejay says:

    fuck off manchester city

  • gimmeg6 says:

all you manc fans, who still think money is the answer to everything …lol
didnt last week show or teach you anything? lol
CLASS AND PRESTIGE CAN NOT BE BOUGHT!
    long live the ARSENAL

p.s why would jan want to go to shitty, when he can be apart of history at A.F.C? lol
your low level of intelligence always amuses me.

    • CiTyBlUe says:

It certainly can’t be bought, Arsenal never even had any class to start with. A gypsy has more class than your inbred lot, thats zero percent if you didnt already know.

Class?, more like you all talk out your cl-ass.

      • NoBlogs says:

Ummm going by the history of your teams purchases. I think your owners wanted to buy us instead. Or it seems they want to make city into arsenal. Have a think. Nasri, Vieira, Taylor, Toure, Silvinhio, Clichy, Platt… Think before you embarrass yourself further.

        • CiTyBlUe says:

Nar we just took what you didn’t deserve to have, theres a difference. If there is any club we want to emuulate then its FC Barcelona, and lets face it you lot failed fecking big time.

Thats why Thierry Henry and Fabregas left for Barcelona, they were bored to feck of you lot pretending to be.

      • club392 says:

Should you not get out of bed and sign on?

        • CiTyBlUe says:

I run my own business thanks, ill leave fleecing my countries social system to your African immigrant fanbase. I heard that two African Arsenal fans are currently on the run for raping a young girl?

      • RobM says:

No need to be so angry and bitter, after all you can only be £200, maybe £300 million and maybe 5 players who will “never play for the club again, honest no really, well maybe they will play after all” away from a title.

      • C.Scott says:

You loser in case you didn’t notice Arsenal beat you at the weekend and completely out played city.Your over payed Arsenal rejects of B team as i like to call them, and talk of class well you certainly don’t have it.this was the best chance city will ever have and they blow it and just to round it of Arsenal stamped on it LOL ha ha ha ha ha lets all laugh at city and this fool and there fan’s who reads up on Arsenal’s signings ha ha ha ha p.s it will be so funny when Man.u beat you in a couple of weeks.

        • CiTyBlUe says:

Barcelona wannabee reject failures, Nasri and Clichy will be winning trophies and titles with City, while you win absolutely naf all and you deserve it, every single heart breaking second of it.

          Prepare yourselves!

        • CiTyBlUe says:

Is your pathetic history going to keep you warm, one season wonder pretenders.

  • Maverick says:

he won’t go to city, because the Ajax boss knows they are a big money club but not a BIG club. He also knows it wouldn’t be good for his development. He has flown in to see Arsenal many times this season but no other teams. He is best mates with Vermaelen and is always talking to him also……..he is going to Arsenal!

  • mohammadu kb says:

Hay guyz 2 all arsenalfans I believe aaron ramsey shd nt be playing for arsenal first team becos he lack d vision n enough creativity for arsenal n if reallyarsenal ve sign vertonghen it means arsenal defence will be a good signing becos it will also solidify arsenal defence which wiill make it inpenetrateable for silly goals

  • wardy says:

It would be nice if he turned city down in favor of a move to a place where its not about the price but the game. with RVP sticking the finger up at city. its a timely reminder that there are some things money cant buy you.
    Gooner for life………….

  • aj says:

And City are fucked to hell and back on Financial Fair Play rules, so they are going to need to off-load players before splashing out on more mercenaries.

    • CiTyBlUe says:

nar you dont say?, you’re just stating the obvious numbnuts, people that state the obvious are idiots.

      • mcc says:

you probably need to buy 3 more strikers to have a chance at the league.

you ejaculated prematurely this season. never mind. go on buy 3 more strikers. buy arsenal. really enjoyed selling you our rubbish.

do you feel better about your life now that your club is rich. can you articulate your feelings? go on, have a cry if it will make you feel better.

perhaps you will go for c ronaldo?

      • mcc says:

isn’t saying “people that state the obvious are idiots” obvious?

        i won’t say the obvious.

        go on, have a cry.

        • CiTyBlUe says:

Don’t you think that if we wanted the god of football, we would go for Messi and not that jumped up pompus pansy boy once a rag scumbag.

C Ronaldo reminds me of that pompus pansy boy you have in Van pussy.

No it isn’t obvious to Arsenal fans that is, you forever makes yourselves look like right twats. which is why I am here taking the piss right now, taking of premature ain’t you a bit premature cconsidering we only have to win one of our last four games to put your priks right in your place this season.

Their not appy, their not appy, their not appy looking up at us, you ain’t winning nothing if we can help it.

  • A/S says:

Arsenal don’t need him. They’ve already got six centre backs (Kos, TV5, Per, Djourou, Squillaci, Miquel) and a few promising youngsters (Boateng, Angha).
If Arséne Wenger didn’t want to sign a cb back when everyone thought they needed it most (and kinda gave in with the signing of Per), why on Earth would he want to add another to the list at this point? And rightly so.

    • james says:

Because Djourou will go out on loan and Squillaci will be sold along with Bendtner, Denilson, Almunia, Vela, Arshavin so plenty of room for new boys

    • Maverick says:

strangely enough i have a funny feeling AW will buy Vertonghen, sell squillaci and move Djourou into a DM trype role because he is used to that position also. I don’t think Djourou is the best option for a CB he isn’t consistent enough BUT as a DM even if he slips up it at least means he is not the last line of defense….look how many times Song has mistimes a tackle or gets dispossed but the defense mops up. I see him being a better player at DM as back up for song (and Mvila if we buy him)

    • sean j little says:

You dont call Djourou a centre back, do you?

  • hay guys we need one more centre back and a defensive midfielder to come & help the likes of Song pluz Mikel incase of injury, a player like Yann M’villa is best signing plus Eden Hazard, not also 4getting additional striker to come and back up RVP.

  • kc says:

Arsenal don’t need another CB, a specialist left back, perhaps. Gibbs and Santos, good but not excellent. Some say that Jan can play there, but he is not a specialist, not better than what we have got. Rather spend the money on M’Villa. He will fight Arteta for the DM role.
Hazard would be great, as we need cover for Rosicky. If not Ox can play there as shown against AC. He needs to be Rosicky’s understudy.

  • CiTyBlUe says:

You all maybe think you and your club has class, but the rest of the world think your a classless bunch of wannabee Barcelona’s.

    • doctor says:

Oouch!!!!stops being so bitter,i guess you know we’re 2 classes above you ‘oil sheiks’….give it a rest already

    • shockandawe says:

You won the league in Black & White 😉

      • CiTyBlUe says:

Thats right, we were winning while you were sht, which means we have history as well as money.

You can keep your imaginary class, but will it be enough to keep you warm on those trophyless nights?

If we can help it, you won’t be winning anything for a very long long time.

  • n1 gooner says:

City blue please tell me the last time you won the league you mug.Talk about class when you have players that are only at city for the money. We have done all of that without mega wages and transfer fee’s and still won untold cups.

You need to slow down mate because your now sounding more deluded then some of the scum fans.Your club deserves everything that’s happened this season and we’re all laughing at you.

  • Elchristoph says:

Sell the deadwood, buy Podolski,Vertonghen and M’Vila, then we are sorted.

  • j says:

Bet we sign no-one and keep squillachi, diaby, etc

  • shockandawe says:

@CiTyBlUe – Your club, along with the Chavs, are ruining football turning it into a mercenaries paradise. “We can pay you double the wages” – great so basically you’re attempting to monopolise football. What a sham. I cant wait until the fair play rules properly kick in. Arsenal will have paid the majority of their stadium debt and also be looking for a multi million pound sponsorship deal. Our revenue streams far outway yours, as does our youth academy. This was your big year to win the league. Never again ta ta
