We’ve heard over and over again that Manchester United need to find some kind of midfield fix this summer. With Man City looking to build upon their successes this season and Paul Scholes’ delightful ginger head beginning to grow (figurative) grey hairs, the need for reinforcements is becoming clear. Michael Carrick can pass it sideways, Anderson can pass it into opposition players and Phil Jones can go on lung-busting runs. But the need for a little more creative endeavour and a few more goals from midfield is clear.
So how should we react to the Sunday Mirror’s claims that Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to level a £10m bid for Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson? The Icelandic International is on loan from German club Hoffenheim and has impressed during his short stay in the Premier League. He’s got on shortage of attacking endeavour scoring 7 goals in 14 games and has shown a propensity for spraying the ball about. He’s no Paul Scholes but he has looked the real deal.
United face Swansea City next week and Sir Alex may well have one eye trained on the Icelandic International to try and gauge if he’s Manchester United standard.
United fans seem to be growing increasingly frustrated with the quality of players that they are being linked with. After spending last summer being constantly linked with £40m+ players like Luka Modric and Wesley Sneijder, the fact that they’re currently linked to Shinji Kagawa and Sigurdsson may be a little dismaying. In this case, however, I fear that they may be right.
14 games in the Premier League are not enough to judge a players worth. Charlie Adam lit up the Premier League last season with his first 20 games and then faded as the year went on. He got his big money move to Liverpool but hasn’t really made the step up. Who’s to say that Sigurdsson won’t be a similar case? My feeling is that you need to have impressed for an entire season (and preferably longer) to entitle a move to a club like Manchester United.
That may sound a little snobby, but United have a huge weight of expectation on their shoulders and need to be up there challenging for trophies. In order to do that they need to have the right personnel on their books. Unfortunately there’s just not enough evidence to suggest that Sigurdsson is the right man for the job.
