Defeat by Arsenal – however disappointing and undeserved – will have acted as a crushing reminder for Liverpool fans. The club still has a long way to go, there are still individuals who are not providing enough and with Champions League football looking more and more unlikely the situation could go from bad to worst. A Carling Cup trophy aside Liverpool simply haven’t been good enough this season and the fan’s will surely be expecting the club to be proactive in the summer in an attempt to fix any remaining problems.

For the meanwhile, all that’s needed from the club hierarchy is some kind of sign that there’s a forward plan. If it were clear that the top brass were aware of the problems in the squad finishing outside of a Champions League slot wouldn’t be so hard to take. So what are we to make of Liverpool’s director of football Damien Comolli’s recent comments that the Reds wouldn’t be making any major changes to their squad in the summer?

It is early days… We will probably make some adjustments in the summer but nothing that we’ve done before. We signed nine players since Kenny came back so there will be a few adjustments but nothing massive.”

“We have done the hard work and now it is a question of making some adjustments in certain positions. Kenny has said it several times that we have a very competitive squad and all positions are covered by two or three players, quality players, and we have a lot of young players coming through as well.”

So is this a sensible line of thought or a sign that Liverpool are beginning to lack in ambition?

For me, it’s clearly the latter. Liverpool remain an ambitious club and Comolli is simply making it clear that a large-scale upheaval is completely unnecessary. There’s a spine of quality throughout this Liverpool side that provides hope for the future. Just look at the way the players performed against Arsenal.

So there’s no need for wholesale changes, but there is the need for one-or-two quality signings that can provide the Reds with some edge. I’m not claiming that Liverpool need a marquee signing – as nice as it would be to see the likes of Edinson Cavani at Anfield. Instead Liverpool need a couple of decent performers to improve in areas where they currently lack. The most important acquisition will be a goalscorer, though fans may also feel that the midfield could use some shoring up.

Could Liverpool steal FC Koln’s Lukas Podolski away from Arsenal? Would Klaas-Jan Huntelaar fancy a move to the Premier League in order to have another face-off with Man United’s Chris Smalling? Either way, it’s my belief that these should be the kind of signings Liverpool are looking at over the summer.

Let’s hope that sensible heads prevail.

Comolli makes mention of the `young players coming through`,with all the talk being about needing another 2 or 3 quality name/marquee players in the summer, why not then give some of these youngsters a ago in our remaining league games.4th place is all but gone REALISTICALLY,lets promote say Adam Morgan(don`t we need a goal scorer!!!),Sterling,Suso(creative attacking midfielders)and maybe Connor Coady for starters, give these guys some DECENT PLAYING TIME in the EPL and drop the under performing 1st teamers in their place(we know who!!!).With 12 EPL games to go,surely this is an ideal time to see these young guys in EPL action, with a view to keeping our strongest possible run on sides for the FA Cup fixtures to secure that trophy.
