Why does this Liverpool flop continue to receive the support of the fans?

So I think we’ve now all come to terms with the fact that Kenny Dalglish and Damien Comolli didn’t have a great summer in the transfer market. Liverpool football club poured a great deal of money into new signings and as of yet we’re yet to see any real reward. Heck you can increase the time period to include last January too and the above statement still holds true. Whilst Luis Suarez’s tricky feet have been a joy to behold, his lack of goals (which he was rolling in at Ajax) have held Liverpool back this season.

The less said about Andy Carroll the better. Stewart Downing, considering his price-tag, has been a flop on a pretty grand scale. His lack of goals and assists is telling, but so too is his inability to get the basics right. Then there’s Charlie Adam who finds it impossible to keep it simple, loses possession too often and appears to have lost his ability over a set-piece.

These players are now unanimously berated by fans (though Suarez is admittedly criticised for his for his antics rather than his footballing ability) who have come to terms with the fact that the policy of buying British was a failure.

So why aren’t fans getting on Jordan Henderson’s back? He seems to be treated as if his age makes him a critical no-go zone. But why is it the case that you can’t comment on Henderson without noting that ‘he’s still got time to develop and will no doubt come good in the end’. Is there any evidence for this statement?

Yes, he buys himself a lot of good will by working hard on the pitch, but I have to wonder if he’s working as hard at self-improvement. There are clearly areas of his game that need working on, but he hasn’t seemed to get any better as the season has progressed. For a start, I’d have thought that Kenny would have had a word with him about his deeply ingrained fear of encroaching on an opponent’s penalty area.

Henderson treats the opposition penalty box like no-man’s land and seems content to stick pencils up his nose and act crazy rather than throw himself forward and get involved in the action. All fans really want to see from young players is some kind of progression. I don’t expect Henderson to be rolling in goals or assists – but is he providing enough signs that he is indeed ‘one for the future’? I’m not so sure. So why do Liverpool fans continue to make excuses for him?

Was so glad he was benched for the Stoke game.

  • ado says:

Because Liverpool fans are Loyal and critising a player never does any good to a players confidence. I remember Lucas getting so much bad press and now he is one of our best players because if he read an idiotic slur like this one he ignored it and concentrated on getting better.

  • freshie says:

Go to a game mate, you won’t hear universal berating, in fact you won’t hear any berating!Still, why let that get in the way of the egotistical high of your own blog.

    • Billy says:

Brilliant Freshie, I gave up when the author made the comment:
“why is it the case that you can’t comment on Henderson without noting that ‘he’s still got time to develop and will no doubt come good in the end’. Is there any evidence for this statement?”
THERE CANT BE EVIDENCE IF YOU REQUEST THE READER TO PREDICT THE FUTURE!
I hate the fact I cant go to Anfield to watch a game (I live in Aus) but FEK I love the fact I dont have to put up with the English media, And drop-kicks like this author. I bet if you go back 2 or 3 years you’ll find an article slating Lucas from the same author. PATIENCE fools, as the old saying goes – Rome wasn’t built in a day.

      • Harry Cloke says:

I don’t think you understand how predictions are made. When it comes to guessing the future we don’t just make it up, we use the evidence around us and then come to the conclusion.

Plenty of Liverpool fans slated Lucas back in the day. I’m sure you’d have prefered Alonso and Mascherano to start ahead of him too.

  • michael says:

    boring.

  • Paul says:

You aint got a clue fella! Henderson plays well when he is actually played in his correct position, CM. He has even picked up a bit when he gets stuck out on RM! The only true bad buy was fat charlie! Try going to watch a match fella instead of sitting on ur fat ass writing on your BS blog!

    • Martin Badger says:

You do no favours to the club you support by defending players who have no ability whatsoever. Try watching Barcelona and Madrid and get a look at what real footballers are like. They are certainly nothing like Jordan Henderson.

  • Jason says:

Obviously you don’t watch enough Liverpool games. Henderson has been played out of position on the right. He is much better placed centrally in a roaming role but with Gerrard there he will struggle to get time in that position.
Whilst I am still unsure on Carroll and his suitability for the way we play, with Henderson I think he will be key as Gerrard loses is natural pace and rampaging ability.

    • Martin Badger says:

I watch plenty of Liverpool games and my opinion of Henderson is that he is an incredibly lucky young man to be making a fabulous living out of a game for which he has no aptitude whatsoever.

  • Ben says:

Whoever wrote this is a moron, who knows nothing about football, nothing about fans, and nothing about Liverpool FC! It’s so poor I can’t even be bothered to address the points made! Must try harder F-.

    • Martin Badger says:

It’s Henderson who must try harder – at present he’s a disgrace to the colours he wears. You see better players in the Sunday League.

  • Deeds says:

Seriously freshie get a grip. Henderson is absolutely pathetic 18 mil for that are you having a laugh he is useless can’t cross pass dribble at speed shoot score should not be in the team whatsoever. Maxi Bellamy kuyt suso Morgan god even Kelly is better in his position.

    • Paul says:

The reason Henderson is struggling so much at the moment is because of people like you. The lad has no confidence whatsoever!

If you had any semblance of a ‘footballing’ brain, you would clearly see he has all of the attributes needed to be a very good, maybe great, player in the future. Give him some time, how long did it take Lucas?? And now he is arguably the best holding midfielder in the league!!

    • bazza says:

He is slao playinmg out of position in most games. When he has played in the centre he generally has a decent game.

  • SuaRed says:

He’s a great player Deeds! However he’s 21 years old, rated at £14m (what we did pay for him) and is a big signing, living away from home for the first time and is being played out of position.

This ld is 7-8 years away from his prime!

You obviously have never played football and don’t know what your talking about.

Also Harry Cloke on what authiority are you writing this terrible article?

    Utter rubbish

  • MarkJulieWalters says:

    Harry,

Where do you get off on this?

After a weekend that has seen a footballer nearly die on the pitch, wouldn’t have been a better use of your time to write a piece asking for supporters to get off opposition players backs, understand that they have families too and its just their job.

But no, you want people to make the lads life a bit more unbearable.

    I hope you are proud

    • Harry Cloke says:

Classy to bring up that when it has nothing to do with my article.

Footballers are not and cannot be immune to criticism. Besides, I wasn’t criticising him for the amount of effort he exerts on the pitch.

      • MarkJulieWalters says:

The problem with your article is that it has nothing to do with anything, It is rubbish.

It basically says, why do you support the players who play for the team you support.

        The article is so unneccessary

        The article is so unnecessary

  • Garbage detector says:

This article is pure garbage. Clearly not written by a Liverpool supporter or by anyone who’s even watched Liverpool regularly or knows anything about the club. That is unless he’s deliberately lying.

When you write “These players are now unanimously berated by fans” you’re already a liar. When you manage to include Suarez in that statement, who is clearly universally supported, not berated by LFC fans, then you really show your true colors. What fans of other teams think (or pretend to think when they play us) is irrelevant, they have their own agenda.

Even the assertion that Hendo is getting more of a free ride from the LFC supporters than the other new players is ridiculous, false, and completely out of the blue.

What an embarrassing blog. Too bad Newsnow allows crap like this to be indexed or nobody would come here.

  • danho says:

@bazza, u knw why he’s being played out of position? coz he has no position in liverpool.PERIOD!!

  • Fabio says:

MarkJW, that was such a low blow, man. So because of Muamba’s problem, we can’t discuss anything wrong with our team? So why bother discuss football at all since 3 kids were shot dead in Toulouse today? Get a grip, mate.
The thing about Hendo is that he makes the team worse. It’s plain and clear. If you’re willing to wait and sacrifice our performances and points for the next seasons by having a ineffectual, toothless, gutless player on the side, be my guest. I for one would rather send him anywhere else to stink someone else’s team, and maybe(not hopeful though) if he does learn to shoot, pass forward or attack in any way, we bring him back. We just can’t afford to carry his useless arse because we don’t have that many good attacking players on the side. Maybe if we had Hazard and Silva on the wings and Falcao and Suarez, we could do with Hendo’s backwards passing and inability to add to the team in ANY way. But we can’t, and we can’t carry passengers for another 20 years of premiership failings. Just because we’re loyal to our players doens’t mean we have to be idiot bastards about the way they play. And if Hendo is reading this, there’s something wrong with him. He should be doing something else, like watching Gerrard’s games when he was 20 and see if he can learn something about guts.

    • Martin Badger says:

Very good points. Henderson is pitiful – at half a million he’d be overpriced.

  • Nye says:

Harry was conceived with a weak sperm.

  • soijdoi says:

What a load of garbage. The writer of this little blog post obviously knows nothing of Henderson and the rest of Liverpool’s squad. Embarrassingly bad writing about a subject he knows nothing about. Harry Cloke, don’t quit your day job kid.

  • James says:

Considering we paid 10 million for quality like Xabi Alonso, I agree that Henderson is not worth his price tag. He is not an attacking midfielder because he scores no goals and he doesn’t create. He’s not a defensive midfielder either and he sure aint a winger, so what does he do? and you can say he is played out of position all you want but so is Dirk Kuyt and he does a good enough job. How many positions has Stevie G played in? He is not too young to be criticized when you consider the likes of messi, fabregas, owen and gerrard started making names for themselves at a younger age, especially as he admits that he has not been great himself!

  • Nasbox says:

Where are the supporters who actually ‘support’. This season, the amount of rubbish so called Liverpool fans have come up with is absolutely unreal. Harry and all you other bloggers who insist on slating all the players trying hard to give us success, why don’t you run off and support Man Utd and leave the rest of us to give the club the loyalty it deserves…….

  • royce says:

I think Henderson has shown enough to suggest that better is around the corner.
Downing is the reason Henderson cannot be criticised too harshly when u consider Downings age and experience and he has been awful.
One other thing is how long did most supporters give Babel and yes he is crap but most gave him time at least to prove something.

  • Red Will says:

Harry please stop commenting on LFC, you obviously do not respect the traditions at the club of supporting players especially the young ones who are trying to improve and become better players.

  • Ice says:

Why do people like the author like to stir things up? Lets be honest Henderson was never supposed to play the number of games he has this season. Injuries to Lucas, Gerrard and Kuyt being in and out of form has resulted in the number of games he has played.
Phil Jones at Scum Utd hasn’t had a great season either but his been hidden by Taggert, Played in mulitple positions come off the bench dropped for a game or two etc. We have not had the opportunity to do this with Henderson. He was always one for the future, and we never bought him as a right winger.
