Could Arsenal actually be better off without Robin Van Persie?

Right, calm down all you Arsenal fans. I am sure you have all read the title and disagreed out of hand that your talisman should not even be considered as one of the players to fall under the potential set of players to leave the Gunners this summer.  However, sentimentality aside, there is genuine cause to suggest that Arsene Wenger should cash in on the Dutchman before he can depart on a free transfer which is beginning to look inevitable.

Everyone is aware of Arsenal’s strict financial model and it appears there are no exceptions to the model as Cesc Fabregas and more notably Samir Nasri found out.  Arsenal had stupidly allowed Nasri’s contract to reach its final year leaving them in a position of weakness.  The only thing which could have kept Nasri at the club would have been a lucrative offer from Arsenal, something they would not be willing to give though as their sensible but frustrating model restricts such decisions.  It appears Arsenal are set to replicate those mistakes with Van Persie having allowed his contract to reach its penultimate year of worth.  So, With Arsenal almost certain not to offer Van Persie the type of deal his form deserves, perhaps they should look to sell the Dutchman for a hefty price.  What ever price the Gunners receive it is sure to offer a large profit on the £2.75 million pounds they spent on the attacker in 2004.

The Arsenal fans amongst you will probably be turning your nose up at even the thought of Van Persie leaving but when exactly has centre forward outwardly expressed his desire to stay at the Emirates? Not once is the answer which is why selling the 28 year old could well represent the best option to all parties.  Van Persie seemingly lacks the desire to commit himself to the latest of Arsenal’s rebuilding acts and who could blame him as he doesn’t have too many years left playing in the world’s top divisions.

With the form he is in Arsenal could expect an offer of anywhere between £25 to £40 million which would represent great buisness for the Gunners.  A large space would also be cleared of the wage bill allowing Arsene Wenger even more money to reinvest wisely into young players capable of transforming Arsenal back to where they deserve to be.  The likes of  M’Villa and Podolski have all been linked with the club and players of this calibre who easily please the Arsenal faithful should Robin Van Persie decide his time is up.

I’m sure the neutrals and especially the Arsenal fans amongst you will be finding the idea of Arsenal being better of without Van Persie’s services difficult to fathom but perhaps you should think a little deeper.  No club is healthy when it has a player driven by money and the reluctance to express their commitment to the club.  Robin Van Persie is no exception.

NAsri only gave us 6 months of brillant football. After that he was anonymous. Selling him was a good thing.

Fabregas was a great player when you were attacking. Less so when you were defending a lead particularly. It is not anonymous that in his first full season with Barca, they will miss out on the title which was their property these last few years.

  • Vincent says:

That is if he doesn’t commit himself to the club this summer.
But if he does then all we need is three players;a striker, creative midfielder, and a center back. Then I think we will be in for a fight for the league,Champions league and even the FA.

  • fred07 says:

“perhaps you should think a little deeper.”

So you think you are a genious, and people should step up to your level of thinking. :D:D:D:D:D

Clueless and arrogant. I adivse YOU to think a little deeper, and suddenly you realise, Podolski and M’Villa are not of Robin’s calibre.

So should Arsenal sell a world class striker and buy an average one, and call it good business?

Think a little deeper before you try to post on the internet.

  • fred07 says:

Oh and ritesh… if you think Cesc is the reason Barca aren’t going to win the title, you need a to see the doctor as soon as possible. Cesc carried us year after year, it was not his fault he was playing with Diabys and Denilsons, and often with Silvestres in the back.

  • David19 says:

Stupid article. Selling him would be stupid. Considering arsene has said he WILL break the bank

  • GarytheRed says:

Don’t be ridiculous, how can we benefit from losing europes top striker. Never read so much rubbish.

  • Hummus says:

    Absolutely crap article/debate.

  • RVP10 says:

Silly article which has no basis of truth – RVP simply said lets discuss things at the end of the season every previous year he has been more than committed to the cause, its his last BIG contract so he’s right to play hardball & he’ll get the best deal from Arsenal which in my mind is where he wants to stay – he’s capt, leader of the group, fans love him & seems very settled with life in London. Pold, M”vila & Vertonghen will be additional re-inforcements to also prove to him the direction we are going…..its also well documented the horrific run of injuries we’ve had this season.

Let me be the last person to write here. This idiot merely want people to respond to his article. All of you should stop commenting.

  • Bart says:

Whow, deep article, very deep. Nice to see an intallektuwal like Francis Kerins put some intelligent thinking into the running of Arsenal. How right he is, we simple souls should not question his thinking but fall to our knees and praise the lord that HE, Francis Kerins, is going to advise Wenger on transfer policy and save Arsenal from mediocracy. Thank you Francis, thank you from the bottom of my heart, I am not worthy.

  • Nonbeliever says:

It is a bait piece intending to lure as many hits as possible without having a single substance.

Do you really want to make Arsenal feeder club for the rest of Europe? Selling players is a phycological game esp : the timing, form and replacement options contribute to forming the perceptions.

Club needs to sell, not RvP but a host of other players. It is felt more and more these days that the financial model in which the club is run from 2004-12 is a flawed one, purely necessitated by the move to Ashburton Grove. Some of the not so stellar players gracing the Arsenal shirt in the past few years that need to be moved are :

    Almunia ($50K)
    Squillacci(~40K)
    Denilson (~40K)
    Arshavin (~80k)
    Bendtner (~50k)
    Chamakh (~60k)
    Park (~40k)
    Fabianki (~30k)
    Vela (~30k)
Benayoun (~60k) – leaving anyway after loan

Potential players in that list would be
Diaby (~50k) – if consistant injuries till end of season
Djouru (~30k) – if another good Centreback is signed

This will leave Arsenal with anywhere between ~400 K – ~500K in weekly wages that is saved, which is about 25 million on wages alone.

He needs to replace this with only 4 players:

    1) Centre Forward
    2) Box to Box midfielder
    3) Centre back
    4) One Wing playmaker

Case for (1) is very obvious so I won’t go there. But it is not Lucas. Someone in the mould of Fernando Llorente or Edinson Cavani, a striker who can lead the line, which Pod is not.
So assuming we play 4-3-3 the first choice would be

    RvP – Cavani – Ox
    and back up of
Gervinho – Theo – Myachi which I think is not bad. But I expect more squad rotation with the midfield (Tomas and Rambo can play here)to keep this bunch happy.

    2) Box to box midfielder – Arsenal need someone who can support the creative player at the top (who currently is Tomas or Rambo). This role is now with Arteta, but my two cents says a towering agile presense will be really good to have against the teams that park the bus. Diaby can be the B-B if he can play consistantly, which I doubt. Pogba can be that guy, but I want a more mature older player. The player I dream in that role is Schweinsteiger, but the realistic targets would be Javi Martínez or Gokan Inler.
Arsenal already has an option for that role in song. But we need one player in DM role which could be either M’Vila or Coquelin.

so the first choice would be either :
    Wilshire – song – M’Vila
    or
    Wilshire – Martinez – Song

    with the backup of :
Rosicky – Rambo – Coquelin (Frimpong and Arteta in the Mix)

This would be a killer midfield esp the option with Song as the B-B fielder and M’Vila to anchor it. I doubt Coquelin and Rambo will be willing to be number 2 here though, so might not happen.

    3) We have Ajax’s Vertonghen expressing interest. Hoping he can come in. It would be great coup if we can get him. That means we have a back four of :
Gibbs – Vermaelen – Koscielny – Sagna and a backup of
Santos – Per Met – Vertonghen – Jenkinson

which I think is one of the strongest defence in the EPL.

    4) this is where I think Club can make the dream signing in either Hazard or Gotze in the mould of Pires. I would be over the moon with either joining the club. But I have a suspicion that boss will trust Ryo to be that star but not as a playmaker but as a classic Winger like Bale/Lumberg.

My first choice Forward would be :

    Hazard – Cavani – RvP
    and the back up of
    Ox – Theo – Gervinho

Which would be the best attacking force in the premier league.

My ideal first team would be

    Hazard – Cavani- RvP
    Wilshire
    Song – M’Vila
    Gibbs – Vermaelan – Kos – Sagna
    Woj

with Ox, Arteta, Rosicky, Ryo, Theo, Ramsey, Coquelin, Per met, Vertonghen, Santos and Jenkinson as the backup.

how would you rate the chances of this team? I would rate it “smashing good”.

For making this squad, Arsenal needs to shell out
    1) Center forward – 20-25 Million for Cavani (~120K)
    2) B-B Player – 10-15 Million for Matinez (~80K)
    3) Central Defender – 10 Million for Vertonghen (~70k)
    4) Playmaker winger – 25 Million for either hazard or Gotze (~100-120k)

The net spend in wages would be ~350k and literaly could save 8 Million on Wages this year alone.

The crux would be the transfer fees which I think Arsenal can afford to pay 60 Million minus (outgoing player transfer fees + previous tranfer fee kitty surplus + Wage savings) which should be in the region of 20 Million.

This would be an one-off transfer window. There will be a net outgoing for the first time since 2003. This will be offset by better results and silverware which Arsenal will deliver and the marketing revenue increases players would bring with them.

As I said selling RvP and staying a feeder club is NOT the answer.

And PLEASE PLEASE stop writing speculative articles without any content in them. If you want to write speculative articles atleast write something like mine 🙂

I’m sorry, but you’re clueless. We definitely don’t need two of tose positions that you are staing Arsenal should get! The one position i mainly agree we need is the centre forward role, and only because RVP will be going or we can waste all the extra money on a new contract for him just for one more season of his class? Not realy worth it in my opion so i feel we should buy s CF to replace RVP and concrete him with his fellow teammates in one season which will help relive Arsenals future. Don’t get me wrong, RVP is class and i hope he statys but just not for a ridiculous amount of money. So i think this article isn’t ridiculous but is true. P.s. yes i am an Arsenal fan.

  • Eddie Yak says:

What a rubbish article one which try to stir fans against RVP !
Why is it better for everyone in Arsenal to let RVP go where is the logic and arguments other than having a ulterior motive and vendetta against RVP. How sickening and cruel can the writer be. RVP score more half the goal the entire team scored and yet this smart alex writer dare to suggest getting rid of RVP for the good of Arsenal.

  • Dan says:

Q: Could Arsenal actually be better off without Robin Van Persie?

    A: No, you dumbass

  • TT says:

If you think Arsenal can afford to lose RVP, then clearly RVP can’t afford to leave Arsenal.

    So he wont.

calm down fellas, each to their own…

  • Philipo says:

Nasri wanted more than we thought he was worth and his career at Man City is proving us right, we were right to let him go. Cesc was a different case altogether, he felt compelled to go home. I might feel like that myself. Losing Cesc was just sad all round.

  • gc says:

rvp should be sold. he is not going to be the same player in 3 years. His current value of approx 30m will depreciate year by year. in any event, he will have to leave us sooner or later (within the next 3 years).
the most important reason why he should go is because the fluidity in our current build-up is limited. with rvp we need to go down the flanks and depend on the crosses and cut backs, but with a more mobile forward, like a messi ( iwish!!!), we can go through the middle.

  • Rufas says:

    This is absolute medriocrity! Arsenal=VP.
