Is it time this ex-Spurs star returned to White Hart Lane?

For somebody as talented as Dimitar Berbatov it must be a huge disappointment to find yourself on the bench each and every week – especially when you’ve shown consistently that you can still cut the mustard at the top level. Berbatov proved last season why he set Manchester United back £30.75m when he joined the club back in 2008 by establishing himself as the Red Devil’s top scorer. He scored an impressive 20 goals in just 32 games but did so against the backdrop of Javier Hernandez’s rise to prominence.

As a result his opportunities have been limited this season. He’s behind Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez in the pecking order this season and doesn’t really look to have a route back to first team football. Sir Alex Ferguson is clearly behind the young talent at his club and Berbatov just doesn’t seem to be getting a fair look in, despite his 7 goals in 10 appearances this season.

The time has clearly come for him to move on. Speaking recently Sir Alex made it clear that question marks surround his future with Manchester United:

“I understand he wants to get first-team football, it is something we need to consider at the end of the season. For a player of his age and his ability it is disappointing for him that he is not getting first-team football. We will look at the end of the season but until then, he remains at United.”

This hasn’t stopped Manchester United from triggering the one-way clause in his contract that allows the club to extend terms for another season. This will ensure that Berbatov isn’t able to leave on a Bosman this summer, but doesn’t mean they necessarily want to keep him on for another year.

With this in mind, would Tottenham be willing to buy him back? Questions remain over whether Spurs would be able to afford Adebayor’s wages should he join them on a long-term basis. Besides I’d argue that Berbatov is technically a better player than Ade and has a better strike-rate too. He’s a great finisher, can create space for himself and has the intelligence to get himself into goal-scoring positions. Despite his age (he’s now 31-years-old) I still think he could do a job for Spurs.

Yes he’s getting on, but pace was never really his primary attribute. The technical side of the game – where he excels – is often the last thing to go, so he could easily have 3-4 years left in him. I personally think it’s a bit of a travesty that Manchester United have so woefully under-utilised him. He deserves another shot at a top club like Spurs and I’m sure he’d arrive with a burning desire to prove himself.

Of course this is all just conjecture for the time being, but isn’t this a move you’d love to see occur in the summer?

to rum n coke – you are joking boy. He won the Premier league and was the top scorer. This is the highest achievement in England. And now when Ferguson is renovating his squad is the best time to get Berba back for coins. It will be great to watch him next season with VdV, Modrich, Bale and eventually Hazard. That will be a Dream team. Remember my words and you will be grateful.
    Best regards

The man is better than what we have. In the same way as he used Spurs why not return the action and use him. He would improve us up front more so than any of the rumoured strikers that have been linked to us, he has years of premiership experience. Use him!!!

  • Dommo says:

He’s 10 times better than what we have and if he returned half the player he was for us then Please Please bring him back…

Granted Mr.B has ability, but that is not the only thing that counts.Just as important is loyalty, attitude, emotional stability and attitude. I think Mr.B is lacking in all these 3 areas.
Harry and the whole of W.H.L.can do without this moody, disloyal, selfseeking individual.

  • Dommo says:

Doing it on the pitch matters and when he was playing for us he always produced the goods and that team was average compared to what we have now….
Loyalty mate disappeared out of the game years ago apart from the odd exception with some of the elderstatesmen of the PL…
