There’s nothing worse for a fan to see one of your best players undergo a protracted transfer saga. Tottenham had is last summer with Luka Modric whilst Arsenal have had it for the last couple of seasons with Cesc Fabregas. Unfortunately for the Gunners, it looks like it could happen all over again this summer – with Robin Van Persie.

After links appeared linking the Dutch striker to Real Madrid, quotes followed in Marca with RVP admitting that he was happy to be linked with a move:

“I am happy to hear of the interest of a club as important as Real Madrid. Of course I would be excited to play there.”

Though he did temper his excitement with a little stark reality:

“I do not think Arsenal will be willing to negotiate.”

But then this is Marca we’re talking about. Everything they print should be taken with a pinch of salt, even when they’re quotes from figures within the game. RVP soon took to Twitter to address the balance:

“Contrary to reports in Spain I have NEVER spoken to Marca newspaper and never gave any interview. Enjoy your day”.

For Marca to create these quotes out of thin air is nothing short of scandalous, but at least RVP has managed to put fans minds to rest. The trouble is, Arsenal fans will always be a little wary of the possibility of their best players leaving so long as they keep failing to win trophies and keep falling down the Premier League table.

Isn’t it worrying that the media is able to fabricate these kind of stories – stories that appear to have a ring of truth because of the Gunner’s precarious position in the transfer market?

If Arsenal fail to finish fourth in the Premier League this season and fail to obtain Champions League football next year, can they really expect to keep hold of Van Persie? I doubt it.

One thing RVP needs to bare in mind: he’s the top dog at Arsenal and has a chance to become a club legend. Things would be different at Real Madrid. In fact, Madrid are only in the market for a striker because they’re looking to replace Gonzalo Higuain who is unhappy with the amount of playing time he’s getting behind first-choice forward Karim Benzema.

But if worst does come to worst and Arsenal are forced to sell, hopefully Madrid would send Higuain the other way to sweeten the deal. After-all the Gunners wont want to be in the same position they were in this summer, having sold Cesc with nobody lined up to replace him.

Whilst they wont want to sell RVP, they may have to – it can’t hurt to have a contingency plan in place just in case.
