Could this £10m Serie A star be the man to ease Arsenal’s woes?

With the Gunners still reeling from three Premier League defeats on the trot, the hope remains that Arsene Wenger will turn to the transfer market in attempt to provide fans with some solace.

Whilst Arsenal need a full-back on loan, they may struggle to find any candidates or clubs willing consent to a short-term move. But when everyone’s fit the squad still has one major area of weakness and it’s an issue that can and should be fixed now.

Arsenal are woefully lacking in forward momentum. They need somebody to give Robin Van Persie some support upfront. The Dutchman has been forced to pick up too much of the slack this season and fears still remain as to what would happen should he pick up an injury.

After all, you can hardly count on Moroccan Marouane Chamakh to come in and score goals and newbie Park Chu-Young has barely had a look in at the Emirates. Arsene’s insistence on playing variants of 4-5-1 and reliance on only one striker has been one of the club’s major weaknesses of late.

Which brings us to the latest Arsenal related rumour in the Daily Star. The Gunners are believed to be interested in Lazio’s 24-year-old striker Mauro Zarate, who’s currently on loan at Inter Milan. But is he the right man for the job at Arsenal?

Firstly, we have to wonder why both Inter Milan and Lazio aren’t interested in keeping him. His loan-move to Inter hasn’t exactly been a great success. The Argentine has failed to score in 12 appearances for the Serie A side and this has likely put an end to any interest the club may have had in signing him on a long-term contract.

He has spent some time in the Premier League on loan at Birmingham City. He scored 4 goals in 14 games at St Andrews, but even then he was part of the side that was relegated to the Championship.  A cursory look over his career reveals a lack of pedigree, though he has been a little more successful during his time with Lazio where he scored 13 goals in 36 appearances back in 2008/9.

The Star has slapped a £10m price-tag on the Argentine’s head and with the Italian side thought to be interested in Andrei Arshavin could some kind of swap deal be on the cards?

He’s the kind of cheap transfer that Arsene loves, but it would be a huge disappointment for Arsenal to snap up a player who is unwanted by both Inter Milan and Lazio. Though Arsenal do need to act in the transfer market, I hope that Wenger steers clear of this one.

Despite the many rumours, Arsenal supporters must resign to the fact that the club is not going to buy or sell any players this January transfer window. Just forget it! And don’t listen to rumours and move on.

AW`s inactivity in the transfer market has drawn immediate criticism. It scuppers our faint hopes of achieving the modest ambition of fourth. This has been the most disheartening aspect of his inaction. It is unremarked that it also signals that AW holds no hope of progress in the CL. He is stating that we are no longer a major force in Europe. The man may have shot himself in the foot. During the last five or six years Arsenal have fielded his team, as Bergkamp and others he inherited have departed. His worsening record over those years, offers little encourageent to any prospective employer. For those who totally dispair, there still a chance that a chairman somewhere will retain his early image. He is undoubtedly a brilliant coach but lacks other essential requirnents to hold the control he has aquired with us. To depend entirely upon RvP continuing fitness and form, without a quality replacenent to spell him during tiredness, is hardly the wisdom of a prudent manager. Awareness of the responsiblity placed on him, RvP`s finishing ability will be under increased strain.

Why pay £10m for a player thats doing very little
where he is,he sounds like another Chamakh to me,another Wenger star.To think we could have had
Crouch,or Defoe fo less than that,at the begining
of the season, does Arsenal have any good scouts?

get a class act.Too right Steve. We can all name a score of better strikers. Many in that price bracket. But not only for the obvious reasons but to encourage RvP to stay, we should get a class act. If he stays, other quality players would accept that we still have ambition. If A W buys the cheapest available – or nobody, RvP will, understandably lead the dash for the door. But bpthing AW does now surprises me.

Zarate was excellent for birmingham while he was there. He’s shown he can do it in the PL for me, and so would be a good signing.

    Arsenal need immediate >
    a solid central defender
a lethal striker to partner RVP and to ensure he stays …. this is critical!
