With the storm surrounding Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s substitution on Sunday, it’s easy to forget that Arsenal fans were pinning their hopes on a player that was just 18-years-old. That the trust placed in a youngster on his full Premier League debut outweighed that placed in an experienced Russian International speaks volumes about what a special talent Chamberlain is.

The most impressive thing about Chamberlain is his lack of complacency. He knows he has to perform if he’s to earn a place in the starting line-up and he’s got the ability to back this up. That’s a far cry away from a number of other Arsenal players who are either lacking in passion or ability.

Alex was understandably overjoyed at making his first team debut but keen to build upon it in the future. Speaking to Arsenal Player, he said:

“I was happy to get a start and obviously against opposition like Man United – it doesn’t come any better than that. I guess it does [show Wenger has faith in him] and that is a positive for me to take away, having the boss’ trust. I’ve got to make sure I repay that with my performances, working hard in training and when I’m on the pitch.”

“That can always change in football though – you can have one good game and the next game is a bad one. You’ve got to deal with the highs and the lows. It was a nice performance from me and I’ve got to make sure I keep my place now.”

It’s pleasing to see a player who’s not content to sit on his laurels and is willing to work hard to ensure his place in the team. Though Arsenal have struggled as of late upcoming fixtures against Aston Villa, Bolton and Blackburn may provide opportunities for them to get back on track. Fans will also be hoping to see Chamberlain get more opportunities in the first team.

Whilst Gervinho’s at the African Cup of Nations there’s a small window of opportunity for Chamberlain to push on and get some good experience in the first team. Arshavin has been woeful, so there’s a very good chance we’ll be seeing a lot more of the 18-year-old over the coming weeks. Though he’s looked impressive against Manchester United and Manchester City in the Carling Cup, the real test will be seeing if he can put a string of good performances together.

And who would bet against this Arsenal youngster pulling it off?

Somebody must have taken AW by the throat, Two from Soton and one from Japan, all of whom will become Gunner favourites. Ex-Cel has apparently matured at an early age and others may peak later. The fans must be careful not to ruin the confidence of lads who are not consistant. Some, like Wright appear late on the scene and it is only now, with less injuries that at 28, RvP is finally able to fulfil his potential. AW`s record in buying is not unblemihed but the trauma he must experience in buying, was doubtless eased,by knowing many clubs were interested in the three.
