Should Tottenham gamble on this Chelsea flop?

With the recent news that Chelsea are all too happy to let go of Fernando Torres for a mere £20m, there’s sure to be plenty of interest amongst various Premier League sides. Given that Torres was considered to be a £50m player a year ago, his fall from grace has been really quite startling. I can’t help but wonder, however, if Tottenham should declare their interest.

Ed. Note: Since writing this, Andre Villas-Boas has claimed that Torres is not for sale ‘at any price’. What’s the reality here? Trying to drive up his price-tag or do Chelsea genuinely think he can come good?

Whilst there’s something fishy about this story, I do think it’s worth considering. Let’s not forget, Chelsea are selling Anelka in January and Drogba will be off to the African Cup of Nations. So are we really supposed to expect that they’d get rid of another key member of their attack at a cut-price? It just doesn’t seem realistic and can surely only happen if the Blues bring somebody else in.

But what if Tottenham could get their hands on Torres? Is this another player upon whom Harry Redknapp could work his ‘magic’?

It has been a long time since Torres was at the top of his game (even during his last few months at Liverpool he was somewhat lacklustre) but could a change of scenery see him spring back into life?

And is the risk worth the price for a club like Tottenham? What’s more, could Chelsea be persuaded to sell to Spurs given the way the Luka Modric saga was handled? Furthermore, given that Tottenham are genuine top-four contenders this season, the Chelsea top-brass may not be so keen to sell a player that could be a catalyst to their success.

I can’t help but feel that Torres would rediscover himself were he to join up with Spurs. Try as he and his teammates may, he just doesn’t fit into this Chelsea side. He needs to join a new team with a system better suited to his style of play.

If it all worked out and Harry was able to get the most out of Torres, surely it would be considered one of the bargains of the season. Given that Fernando has proven himself in the Premier League, it’s merely a case of him needing to be spurred into life. Tottenham are a team on the rise with real prospect and a distinct attacking flair to their play. It strikes me as the perfect fit.

So long as Tottenham can see through this transfer without being talked into a deal with Modric, I’m all for it. Spurs need a striker who will be with them for the long-term and Torres needs a new club. Could this be an ideal partnership?

There’s only one thing worse than being stupid enough to believe rubbish in the Sun newspaper, and that’s being imbecile enough to regurgitate it and spread it around the Internet disguised as a discussion piece. Grow up and write something of worth or disappear and leave football writing to those with more common sense.
