Is it time for this Arsenal star to retire from International duty in order to pay his debt to the club?

|

Robin van Persie the third best player on the planet – yes I will stick my name out and say that no striker apart from Messi and Ronaldo come close to Robin at the moment. The man’s run of goal scoring form is second to none this year scoring eleven goals in ten games already this season in an Arsenal team that has been below par and would probably be languishing at the bottom of the table if not for his contributions.

But lucky for Arsenal Van Persie dragged this arsenal team out of a run of bad form and battling for a champions league place however we all know van persie can’t keep injury free for long  so should he retire from international football in hope of prolonging his career?

With sixty one caps and twenty five goals for the Dutch van persie is a regular in the world’s second best team yet it seems every time an international break looms arsenal fans are sat reading blog after blog to see how long Van Persie lasted in an international match and why he went off and hoping not to see the words “what looked to be a serious injury”.

Robins last injury suffered on international duty was when he damaged his ankle ligaments and was ruled out for about a month … at first. It was later revealed that Van Persie would be out half the year with arsenal even pondering legal action over the treatment of van persie and the fact that he had stayed fit they might of mad a serious challenge for a trophy and with Arsenal only five points off the title at the end of that season,  some might argue if he had stayed fit they would have been champions which comes with a nice bonus prize.

Van persie wouldn’t be the only high profile name to retire or take a break from international duty to prolong his career Ryan Giggs did the same and has reaped the benefits still playing football at the ripe old age of thirty-seven and still going on. Then there’s Miechial Essien who had a serious injury like many of van persie’s he then returned from injury and immanently said he was taking a break from international football saying he wanted to pay Chelsea back and get a good run of games under his belt for him although this hasn’t bared riches  as he’s spent most of this season on the injury table.

Now Van Persie isn’t just going to quit international football because I’ve wrote an article about it but maybe it’s something to consider? If he’s serious about winning trophy’s he must start getting games on a regular basis for full seasons however van persie has never refused to going on international duty before even when it had not been advised ( because of injury ) and to retire now may make him a public hate figure in Holland as they may have options up front in Huntelaar and Babel but they don’t have anyone with the all round ability of robin van persie moreover they wouldn’t want to lose anyone from the squad that got to the world cup final and has achieved the number two rank in the world.

  • HR says:

For him, from a personal point of view – it would make no sense.
Holland are in the top 3 international teams in the world, which means for Van Persie, it provides what must be his best chance for a major trophy.

  • David Dougan says:

He’s not going to give up international football at 28. He’ll play for Holland until at least the 2016 Euros. Why would any player in their prime choose to quit international football when there’s a World Cup in Brazil in less than three years?

  • slugboy says:

18 goals last year – his best ever tally. Normally down around the 5-13 mark. Not really third best striker in the world tallies. I think Aguero, Tevez, Rooney and Neymar may disagree with this claim too

    • Cameron Makeman says:

31 goals in 29 league games depends what way you use stats since its worth stating van persie hasn’t played a full season in years
