This one will probably be laughed off, but given the state that the club is in, it strikes me that it’s worth considering. Without further ado, here are FIVE reasons why Arsenal should sign David Beckham.

David Beckham is the most famous football star on the planet. He’s the person that those who don’t follow football think of whenever the subject is brought up. Girls think he is dreamy, and guys copy his sense of style (or used to).

Amazingly he’s followed by millions of football fans world-wide. If he were to move to Arsenal he’d bring with him a wave of good publicity. I’m sure it’d also give Arsenal football club further markets to exploit. I’ve heard it suggested that football clubs could recoup their spending on Beckham simply through T-Shirt sales. Whilst I doubt that is possible, I’m sure the astute folks up in Arsenal’s financial department would be able to exploit the deal for all it’s worth.

Beckham remains the face of English football and a major draw for neutral fans. His addition to the squad would make Arsenal more marketable.

It’s also a chance to get one over on the red side of Manchester. Fans will doubtless be up in arms that one of their old favourites has taken a move to a rival club. Not quite on the same level as Sol Campbell leaving Tottenham to join Arsenal, but it’d be fun to see nonetheless.

Arsenal are going through a tough time at the moment and need all the leadership on the pitch that they can find. In truth they’ve failed to find a real Captain since the height of Patrick Viera’s powers. Whilst Beckham isn’t quite the player he used to be, he has led a number of very successful teams. He has played under a number of different managers and in a few different formations and systems and has a lot of experience in just about every level of football.

And we haven’t even mentioned that Beckham still remains a good player. He’s one of the best distributors of the ball of this current generation. Arsenal could use his knowledge of distribution to their advantage – I’d certainly like Beckham to help tutor the younger kids in training.

Let’s not forget that a relationship already exists between Beckham and Arsenal. Arsene has given him permission to train with the squad on a couple of occasions. If the price is right, why not offer Beckham the last contract of his career?
