Should Wenger be the next England manager?

|

Should Wenger leave Arsenal in the near-future there are questions of where he could go to. One job potentially on the horizon that I’m sure would appeal to Wenger is the England job. Unlike Sven and Steve McLaren he’s had proven success in England, and unlike Capello he has a knowledge of the English footballing culture. People might say he isn’t fond of using English players in the Arsenal team but I believe he just doesn’t ‘use them for using’s sake’. After all, he spent £12million on Theo Walcott and a potentially-similar amount on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. He’s also brought Jack Wilshere through.

And of the players he’s let go from Arsenal have any of them gone on to anything better? Matthew Upson has been a decent enough defender. David Bentley has been more about hype than performance and Anthony Stokes plays in the Scottish Premier League. The one that stands out is Ashley Cole but, similar to Fabregas this wasn’t a case of Wenger wanting to sell.

Defence has recently been Wenger’s weak spot. Whilst Mertesacker has a good pedigree the jury is clearly pending on him in the Premier League. Other than Vermaelen the defenders Wenger has signed haven’t been good enough, and when one thinks of last season’s league cup final have actually been a liability.

With the England job, Wenger would already have 3-4 good centre backs at his disposal (and Smalling who has been outstanding out right back). In Joe Hart he would possess an established Premier League goalkeeper, whilst Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines would battle for the left back slot.

England already boast a nice balance of players ranging from the experienced (Terry, Gerrard, Lampard) to the youthful (Wilshere, Jones, Smalling). Wenger’s main obligation would be getting them to play well, which Wenger has proven he can do with his team; and to perform at a major tournament. Now obviously, this latter objective can only be proven either way by observing them when they get there. What has been shown is that Capello is incapable of this.

In an ideal world an Englishman would be managing the England team. But, the current crop of candidates are largely unproven at the top level domestically. Even Harry Redknapp’s biggest achievements are an FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2007-08 and one 4th placed finish with Spurs.

One of the main drawbacks for Wenger though, is if he felt the media spotlight was shone too much on him at Arsenal it would be nothing compared to the intrusion at England level. Every aspect of his existence (including the rumoured troubles in his private life) would be promoted to front page news. And whilst journalists always compliment Wenger on being a witty and interesting, and surprisingly honest interviewee he has never taken criticism well.

With all that said though, after the failings of Capello at the last world cup and the dearth of managers waiting to replace the Italian I think Wenger would be the ideal candidate for the next England manager.

Well at the moment i do not think Mr Wenger should be shown an Exit because where Arsenal is now, i do not think whether there is anyone who can manage the problems of Arsenal except him.
