Prem Players we Love to Hate: Past and Present

|

Ivan Campo – Seemingly having escaped from the Hair Bear Bunch, Campo found himself playing for Bolton. He was the most fouled premiership player in 2003, largely due to the fact that he would happily throw himself on the floor whenever an opposing player looked as though they might tackle the Spaniard.

El-Hadji Diouf – A host of outrageous wrongdoings have stained his career, most notable though have been those involving him spitting. Somehow the likeable Dutchman Arjen De Zeeuw managed not to retaliate when he got a taste of Diouf’s bad habit.

Duncan Ferguson – It’s fair to describe Duncan Ferguson as a psycho. Unsurprisingly the big-man served time in prison during his professional career after head-butting John McStay as well as a policeman. Duncan was not one of those players that ‘become another person on the pitch’ – he was just born to hurt people.

Joey Barton – Perhaps the most infamous player on the list. Considered to be a player of great quality whose career may have been limited by his reputation, Barton continues to be involved in controversy. Recently ‘Joey’ has attempted to change the public’s perception of him with his twitter account, trying to use words rather than violence to express his feelings. How civilised he must be? While somebody with Barton’s ego will always feel they deserve another chance, what’s really baffling is that teams are just as keen to sign the midfielder. He’s testament to the fact that in football it doesn’t matter who you are or what you’ve done, as long as you’re currently out of prison then only ability matters.

Keiron Dyer – It’s always going to be devastating for any player when their troubled by injury and Dyer’s case is no different. The talented midfielder has had his career decimated by injury and his opportunity to fulfil his potential stripped from him. However, the ridiculous wages he took from West Ham to comfort his woes has turned sympathy into hatred. Dyer was reportedly on £63,000 a week as well as player image rights but refused to take a cut or move on for less than the full worth of his contract. Greedy much?

If you feel there have been some huge oversights or indeed that some players have been misunderstood and have been hard done by, then please feel free to comment.
