Could this be the broken promise that Meireles has spoken of?

Raul Meireles  spoke out on Monday about his departure from Liverpool  and he said there was one promise Liverpool broke and that caused him to leave. Now what could this broken promise be? Meireles said:

“All I have to say is that I had one promise at Liverpool which wasn’t fulfilled. It’s not the only thing to blame. But that’s why the Liverpool fans are unsure why I left….Liverpool asked me to hand in a transfer request, so that’s normal. I was aware that Liverpool wanted to sell me in the summer, which was a bit surprising to me. There’s no point touching this subject any more. I was a bit surprised, but now I’m just concentrating on my present and future, and that’s with Chelsea.”

Looking back at the history and speculation surrounding Meireles at Liverpool, he was signed by Roy Hodgson  from Porto and there is a suggestion that he was given a low wage contract when he signed with the ‘promise’ that his salary would be doubled if he had a good season for Liverpool. Now Meireles went on to play very well under Kenny Dalglish and that surely would have prompted Liverpool to offer him a new contract as per agreement with Hodgson.

But since Hodgson got sacked, it sounds like the promise to Meireles also went. But surely such an agreement would have been down on paper? What other promise could Liverpool have made to Meireles that they broke?

Could this be the oldest rehash of a story that’s been aroung for about a week?

  • TTD says:

Is it possible that Hodgson made this promise without the authorisation of the dierctors?

  • Lfc4lifeR says:

Regardless… If he was on low wage contract after performing and himself it normal for any club to up the wages of an important player…

But the fact that he was being touted about over the summer tells me ge wasn’t important to KK….

A poor decision as has already proven after we didn’t have brains to unlock Stoke while bring dominant in possession and with Raul providing an assist for sturridge to score the winner for Chelsea!

A poor decision?? What about the games he played in last season when we didn’t score? You can’t seriously suggest because he got an assist in a game at home on the same day we failed to score it was a mistake. The fact is we did unlock stoke on numerous occasions. It wasnt the final pass that was the problem last saturday it was the finishing!! Also on Raul what about the bottling out of tackles, the large amount of stray Hollywood passes. Apart from those 6 games around Feb he wasn’t consistently great. With Steven Gerrard coming back his chances were even more limited.

Mate it’s not his job to score goals… We have Carrol for that, well atleast I think we do!

Let me put it you this way… We a far better team with him than without!
My suggestion of his assist for chelski, while we were pretty clueless against Stoke was just to say that it adds insult to injury….

Chelsea can any player in the world… Why go for Raul?

So he’s not enough for Chelsea but not good enough for us? Yh maybe in the 80s that would have ran true.

As for him having limited action with Gerrard returning I don’t agree… Contrary to what some blind fans think, last season when gerrard dud play he was poor more than not! Less 2 outstanding games!

But gerrard is a legend and class player… But you play a risky game when getting rid of Raul, when Gerrard is not even fit and not knowing how his injuries have affected his
        game!

If your expecting the the likes of Adams and henderson to bring us back in the top 4… You will be disappointed!

If Henderson, Adams and Carrol start against spurs We will lose again!

        Either way we won’t tomorrow!
